youos.com — YouOS is a snazzy new javascript-based operating system that is unlike many of the web "desktops" you currently see. Instead of just cobbling together some draggable windows, this seems to be a serious effort to create a javascript OS that contains both back end and front end functionality. The tutorials and IDE are particulary interesting!

Actually everyone is complaining about how this is irrational crap because you would need an OS and a browser to get to the supposed "Web-based OS" But ive never been one for conventional thinking. Think outside the box for a minute and think of what this application could be applied to, like having a Operating system for the up and coming DS with Opera Web Browser.

Why does anyone even bother with these, Put my important and private data on someone else's hard disk:? Where I don't controll backups? where I don't control who accesses what?Where if they are too "sucsessful" I loose access to my data? (digg effect or slashdot effect) and what of my private data if they decide to go out of business? Why? I'll keep my data on my own hard drive thanks, where it's only endangered by my stupidity.

Confirmed that YouOS uses the CLIENT network connection. This makes YouOS NOT function as a proxy server and therefore has no use. Heh.

of course it's not an operating system, only first steps. but the idea is interesting. will see

Smells like WebOS (no link because it's gone now). They implemented a whole OS, browser, office suite, etc., back in the wild days of the Mozilla milestones and IE 5. I used it and loved it, but they folded. They were bought and the new product is HyperOffice, which is far less OS-ish.<a class="user" href="http://www.webos.com/">http://www.webos.com/</a>--Quentin

YouOS is the main project of WebShaka Inc. The first release/patch was released March 18, 2006.

it has a file system, it is just not a true os because it is not really running on anything but the server. It is more like a centerpiece, that a real os would connect to. I am a loyal user of YouOS.

nope. YouOS is working on a live CD that you will be able to just put in your computer and if it has an internet connection you can run YouOS as THE OS of your computer

If the point of all these various web based services popping up everywhere is to be able to access your work, files, data or whatever from anywhere then why not just install one of the secure remote access services onto your home computer which you can then access from any other computer anywhere in the world via the Internet.I have been using the free LogMeIn service for this exact purpose for some time and it has always worked flawlessly for me. I have even used a free trial of the LogMeIn Rescue service to fix a problem on my daughter's PC at her place from my PC at my place and, again, it worked flawlessly. There are many such applications out there including some that work through your email account and I tried a number of them before settling on LogMeIn.Provided you have a broadband connection the speed sacrificed in accessing a remote PC compared to accessing your own local PC is minimal.Security wise LogMeIn uses 256 bit encryption which is greater than some Internet banking applications use.

<a class="user" href="https://sgddemo.sun.com/">https://sgddemo.sun.com/</a>"From this site you can login anonymously to a live Sun Secure Global Desktop Software deployment and run a variety of Windows, Solaris, Linux and other UNIX applications simply by using a Java-technology enabled web browser."Ah hah! Multiple OS's running from one browser system. That sounds like it could be useful.

You could always set a VM server (VMware) <a class="user" href="http://www.vmware.com">http://www.vmware.com</a> publishing XP.Then use a web browser or a simple dumb terminal - thin client <a class="user" href="http://affirmtech.net/thin_client_computer_service_phoenix.htm">http://affirmtech.net/thin_client_computer_service_phoenix.htm</a>Enjoy!KOZPhoenix Computer Repair specialist<a class="user" href="http://www.affirmtech.net">http://www.affirmtech.net</a>

Uhhhh, yes... that would be the _exact_ reason to give something negative digs.
