engadget.com— The new spring update will enable Windows Media Connect or Media Center streaming MPEG-4 up to 8Mbps, H.264 up to 15Mbps, and PlaysForSure WMV videos (and, as we understand it, PlaysForSure audio as well)

I don't know where Handbrake/MediaFork is at on Windows, but the Mac version of it kicks ass. The best media ripper/encoder/anything I have ever used. For the Mac folks, it is the best solution. I have already been encoding my DVDs in .mp4 h.264 to throw on my PC which I just hooked up and now this is announced. Go figure.
No support for divx/xvid? Wow, doesn't MS realize that the majority of people who buy mp3 players use pirated songs? Imagine buying an ipod an only being to play songs bought off of itunes. So why don't they apply that same mentality for the Xbox 360 and support divx? I'm sure they'll get a lot more sales of the 360. The movie studios probably wont let them.
Just keep in mind that the xvid streaming apps are doing live transcoding on the PC that's serving the content. People always gloss over this fact, but if your content is bieng served from a PC that someone else is using the content will be jumpy and/or the PC will lag if it's specs aren't high enough.

Woo, now I can stream my Mac media library. It's ideal, since Apple TV costs about the same but doesn't play video games.

Check out www.orb.com, too. They will stream to the 360.
