Rocke86 MS IPTV is more than a DVR. It is a full blown SERVER AND SET TOP infrastructure that telcos like AT&T are paying hundreds of millions to MS for. It is a full on replacement for cable or satellite service--its not just a DVR. The MS IPTV client contains the channel guide, DVR, caller ID, games, web browser and anything else you've ever seen on a cable box (plus way more). This client usually runs on a MOTO IPTV box that AT&T gives you, so its a trip to see it on 360.IPTV doesn't use tuners so no need to make one for the 360. Its an IP Multicast network. You will be able to use this box to "tune" to as many MPEG4 IPTV streams as your have bandwidth for all at the same time.It doesn't eat into your traditional DSL data pipe that you have now from your telco. When IPTV comes to your area you will get upgraded to a 20+ Mbs ADSL connection (so will everyone else in your neighborhood). AFAIK that bandwidth has very high QOS and is dedicated to their TV service whether you like it or not--and you won't just be able to not subscribe to their TV service and use it for data.
If Comcast is the one providing the service in my area, then this is useless. IPTV carries with it the promise of breaking the TV monopolies, not giving them another way to screw the customers.
the good thing about this is being able to get HD... im in a dorm room so i usually dont get HD content unless its on my laptop, so this will help alot! too bad its not coming out until holiday 07 :(
bradsullyYou're right about the one thing, your telco puts out IPTV over their private network with 20+ Mbs.However, the MS IPTV systems RUNS their private network (from a TV service perspective). Instead of buying all of the software to run an entire tv service from start to finish from someone like Motorola, they're buying it from MS. It does video on demand, TV guide, etc. The MS client does not work over the public internet it is the direct equivalent of all of the software (server side and set top box) that cable providers like Cox, Comcast, Time Warner use to run their TV services over their private coax network.
@ bonchxFirstly the "iTV" will not be a IPTV client at least at first its primary purpose will be more of a airport express with video. It may have on demand content but not full TV channels like the 360 will have. second how can you possible call the 360 a failure its one of the best consoles made, you said the Wii sold as many units in its first 3 months as MS did in its first year thats just wrong 10.4 million Xbox360 sold to date vs 4 million Wii's thats half at best. sure it shows the wild popularity of the Wii but consider the market for each console as well as the price for each system. If all your gonna do is spread FUD at least put a disclaimer at the top of your comment stating you have no idea what your talking about.//End Rant.
