"Today, Japan's Jiji News service reports that Microsoft is planning such an update for as early as next year!"As early as next year??!?! SCORE!!!!!Of course, they should have had HD-DVD included at launch, instead of at some point within the next 12 months like the PS3 IS GOING TO DO WITH BLU-RAY!!! YESSS!!!...

And another reason to not run out and be the first to buy a new device!

lol, Microsoft screwing it's own consumers like usual. Especially when HD-DVD is prone to get it's ass kicked by Blu-Ray

@geneHACKmanactually, they did, but not to the public. they told the creator of the DOA series that they won't be doing HD DVDs. the creator had originally wanted the game to be made on HD DVDs but was told he couldn't so he was somewhat pissed by it. he wanted to take advantage of a new format. i guess we'll know by next year if this story is true.

"Yeah because a company has NEVER released soemthing after they said they wouldn't.....*cough iPod flash memory cough*"that's different. that's apple. haha! get it? anyways, apple does that kinda crap all the time. your point is null and void. ;)also, WHO CARES if ms decides to us hd-dvd!? really!? i'm not saying who cares if they switch. obviously, a lot of people might get screwed if that happens. i'm saying, who cares if hd-dvd isn't successful [in the movie market]. as long as it can be used for xbox 360 games, it really doesn't matter if hd-dvd is successful or not. it's still much better than what's being used for xbox 360 games now!

@kirinpoint is taken, i was referring to the US market, not Japan.@everyone who replied to meanyways guys, let's see who wins. i just want DVDs to catch up to the high def technology. they're taking forever compared to HDTVs. i dont really care who wins as long as i can get it.

Blu-Ray vs HD-DVDWhat about all this talk about holographic disks?I think that if we are going to have to completely change formats, why not go with something that will hold lots more and not need to be updated so soonMake a 20 year format instead of a 10

Even if MS releases HD DVD xbox 360's, the HD DVD will only be for movies. Games will still be in regular DVD format so as not to alienate people who bought the original 360's or deny them from buying new games that are released. If MS switched its format completely to HD DVD, they would lose all the customers who bought the system before the upgrade since their older xbox 360's couldn't play newer HD DVD games. At most, MS may add HD DVD capability, but it would only be used to play newer HD movies. It wouldn't effect the games at all.Since most people who care about movies would buy a stand alone dvd player anyway, and since the primary purpose of the 360 is for games, the concept of HD DVD 360's is interesting, but it is essentially a moot point.
