our-picks.com— "Here?s something that?s not spreaded and popular as it should be - XGL. Real life doesn't apply to desktops".

I started running Compiz on my trusty old Geforce 3!And yes, things were decently smooth! Video playback and games could have been a bit snappier, but let's be honest, I was using Xgl (which is a bit of a hack)Since then I've upgraded my monitor, and decided that the increased resolution deserved a better graphics card.. a 7600GS makes my eyes cry tears of joy with Compiz, and since I'm no longer using Xgl, but the nVidia 9xxx drivers, everything is fast, even in a wobbly translucent window.
Duke Nuken Forever has "demoed a working version on a computer?", doesn't mean it's not vapourware..The BumpTop thing was on Digg about a year ago - the same video I'm pretty sure, and there doesn't seem to be *any* form of release.Any XGL is just an X-Server, the shiny bits are Compiz and Beryl. But regardless, the BumpTop thing is totally different to Compiz and such - Comparing BumpTop to Nautilus (The file-manager) would make more sense..- Ben
I wounder how long until we see and open source version of Bumptop. There are a whole load of open source dynamic physics engines out there, ODE, Bullet, googling ogre3d physics will probably turn out some more. It wouldn't be to hard to spawn a bunch of blocks with the physics engine based on the files in the desktop directory. Some of the gesture stuff might be hard to implement such as the stacking etc, the other thing is how to actually interact with the files themselves, Bumptop didn't actually do any of that, it just had textured blocks but it was only a demo. Being able to render windows on the side of the physics cubes might be doable, there is thumb nailing in Beryl/Compiz's alt-tab already, when you click on the cube it could just maximize to the view port, and minimize would actually shrink it and then it would drop back to the desktop.Wounder how folders would work (maybe the piles are folders).

What the hell, that's even MORE useless than BumpTop! Wobbly Windows? What's the point of that!?

How many times has this video been on the front page? Three time at least, I think.
