xbox-scene.com — (xbox-scene): Microsoft has released a statement with specifications showing that the foil found on Xbox 360 GPU heatsinks is a part of the assembly process, and aids in thermal transfer. This apparently is not the source of any overheating.

I'll be honest. I did not know about using foil for heat transfer as I have only seen thermal paste being used for installing heatsinks. Now I've learn something new.

You guys should here the latest Major Nelson podcast. He explains this issue there. The foil is there for a reason.

For clarification, the reason the fans run slower in Live Arcade mode, dashboard or the DVD is that only 1 proc is turned on (least that's what I gathered from Major Nelson's podcast a few months back) The fans kick in high mode when all three procs are on -- such as playing a 360 game. Interestingly enough, seems only 1 proc is needed for backwards compatible games.
