npr.org — Blown calls have led people to clamor for instant replay. But that won't help -- instead, it's time to fix a system that's paternalistic, exclusionary and destined to fail -- in short, it's not unlike several economies in Europe.

//That's led many people to call for instant replay. But that's a silly idea, one that would drain the sport of the beautiful momentum that can make a 0-0 game fascinating.//
A complete stalemate being 'beautiful' is up to debate. But I don't think allowing each side to be able to challenge at least 1 call per half will break up the momentum all much considering that most halves go on for an extra few minutes due to all the diving going on.

I've been watching football games like ten years. Now I believe that if somebody taps your shoulder with his finger, the impact is so great that you start rolling on the ground, scream in pain and maybe you'll explode. Basic physics.
phoyoJun 28, 2010
Not to mention that taking a hit anywhere on the body immediately results in pain around the facial region.
ivanmarshJun 28, 2010
The World Cup needs fewer pansies dropping to the ground claiming injury when they clearly weren't touched. I watched a total of 5 minutes of play and saw this BS twice. No chance I'll ever be a fan.
fxu1989Jun 28, 2010
I'm on the line when it comes to replay for soccer. If it's put in place, there has to be a limit as to how many they can review.
Otherwise there would be a penalty every time there's a corner kick. Players grab players, etc etc. I know that's not supposed to happen, but it happens and it is simply ignored unless it's brutal. With the replay in place, teams will simply call it to get the penalty. It will slow-down the game heavily and make it boring. It's enough that players stall a s**tload of time to run down the clock.
yamothJun 28, 2010
This is why we are advocating for limited replay, as in each team getting 1 challenge per half.
cyberjoekJun 28, 2010
Perhaps make them lose a sub if they're wrong? It makes it very expensive if you're wrong but worth while if they're right. The Risk/Reward has to be right to limit the calls that are challenged.

i'd take Jim Joyce over the FIFA officials any day of the week.

The article is right, in game replay is ludicrous and would ruin the game. Im not sure about the dis-allowed goals issue, but as for players diving, or sneaking in brutal fouls all there needs to be is a post-game replay. Allowing yellow and red cards to be issued for these things, taking effect in the last second of the game. This could potentially cause players to miss the following game. Also get rid of this bulls**t where cards are wiped clean before major games. If the players had to get red carded to get to the finals, they can live with the consequences.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"The Beautiful Game" my ass! Soccer is an ugly farce.
robskim101Jun 28, 2010
OR HOW ABOUT JUST WIRE THE REF UP TO SOMEONE WATCHING THE REPLAYS IN THE STANDS IT TAKES 5 SECONDS TO LOOK AT A REPLAY
ALTERNAATIVELY, GIVE EACH TEAM A NUMBER OF APPEALS SIMILIAR TO TENNIS WHEN THEY CAN CALL OUT THE REF IF THEY BELIEVE HE HAS MADE A WRONG DECISION WHERE IT WILL BE CHECKED ON THE REPLAY
RAGE WE LOST TODAY im sad
croutonicusJun 28, 2010
Credit to Gary Lineker for the appeals idea.

credit to me i thought of it bruh

While I agree with your ideas, I don't like you for some reason that I just can't put my finger on. Buried.
thedougemJun 28, 2010
Heaven forbid people show emotion on the internet. It's srs bsns after all.
captzomborgJun 28, 2010
Typing a rant in all caps isn't "showing emotions." It's showing special needs.
If our schools are really teaching that all caps is proper writing technique then I am scared. What ever happened to someone expressing tone and emotion through syntax and verbiage.
zapassJun 28, 2010
what a load of sentimental horse s**t, lol.
that NPR moron needs to get some "beautiful momentum" up his ass and STFU.
the game needs video assisted refs and that's it, get out of the way retard.

What it needs is for all the players to stop acting like such pussies: Anyone catch that bit in the Argentina-Mexico game where the Argentinian player was showing the ref his lip where he's gotten a boo-boo: Here's some footage of the Italian's "practicing:" http://www.frequency.com/video/italian-soccer/137738
monodedeJun 28, 2010
Lol I saw that. I'm a fan of Argentina, but that was ridiculous. I nearly threw my hat at the screen.
Closed AccountJun 28, 2010
Thank god someone caught that! I was in a cuban bar w/Mexican AND Argentinean fans and EVERYONE was howling at the screen when that happened. Do u know the players name - the momma's boy?
monodedeJun 29, 2010
It was either Javier Mascherano or Nicolas Otamendi. I think it was Mascherano, not really sure though.
jargonautJun 28, 2010
Honeslty, the NBA isn't much better as far as "cry babies and drama queens" go. It's just the way the individual sports are and it becomes part of the game. Hockey and American football are always there for those who get annoyed by this. Not every sport has to play by the same rules. I kind of like how soccer refuses to change. It's a beautiful sport even if the refs can totally sway a game with stupid calls. This happens just as often in basketball where a bad call can sway the game that ends 89-88... Maybe it's just more noticeable in low-scoring soccer games.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
happyimbecileJun 28, 2010
My only complaint is that the guys in soccer really play it up like it's some kind of terrible injury, then proceed to prance around the field 5 seconds later. I've never once seen an NBA player act like a little bitch on the court, fake-crying like a stupid little fag, then get back up and slam dunk the ball while going "BOOOOYAAAAAAAAH BIOTCHES!"
ajaxmilJun 28, 2010
Ah, but the difference between Soccer and basketball is that when an NBA player decides to fake an injury (a la Paul Pierce), the clock stops, and can not be used as a time-wasting tactic.

NFL instant replay does nothing but improve the sport. Every argument against it in World Cup or Baseball is flat out wrong.
rblancarteJun 28, 2010
I would argue the point that replay does nothing but improve the NFL.
- Replay bogs the game down. When the officials can rely on it for a crutch (end of halves & games and OT) it REALLY bogs the game down. Just look at the NFC Title game this year. Almost half the plays in OT were reviewed.
- Replay changes the way rules can be applied - See the Tuck rule
- Replay gets really deep in the minutia of the game - see all those cases where you are waiting to see if a ball was "coming out" when a guys knee is a hair off the ground
- Replay isn't perfect. How many times have you seen a replay of a call be obvious (oh he was down) and yet the outcome is the opposite? It happens enough.
And every argument is against instant replay is not wrong. Many are very valid.
Make no mistake, sports, soccer especially should look to improve their calls to get things right, replay isn't necessarily it, especially when this article has great information about what can be done to improve the game without replay.

f**k FIFA!
really how hard could it be to create a ball that contains a ridicules small chip and to put up 4 sensors on the field?
ad two line referees and one on the field
it would raise the cost by a factor of about 5500€
1.5k for the line referees each, 2k for the 2nd field ref and 500€ for the ball and the sensors
okay it would probably more expensive but srsly the whole world is watching and it's getting pathetic
rsm33Jun 28, 2010
I think they need to make 2 new rules:
1. If you go down with an injury, you stay off the field for 5 minutes or until 2 further stoppages have occured. Whichever comes first. Or you are subbed out of the game immediately.
- This will stop a lot of the acting, and provide some incentive to not fake it.
2. Dives that are caught on film are reviewed after games, and 1 game bans are handed out retroactively.
It sucks that either thing has to happen, but unless they do something about it, it will only get worse.
naufragousJun 28, 2010
To be fair to the ref in the US game, he did add 3 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game. He did that specifically because the Ghanan player was, in his estimation, faking it and wasting time.
The problem of flopping is universal; every country does it. I agree with the poster who suggested that FIFA should review the plays after the game and if they find egregious examples of flopping they need to penalize that player in some way (maybe start the next match with a yellow card, fine them, something).
esixtyJun 28, 2010
Sometimes the ref is such a massive c**k that fair play doesn't even matter...
I remember Robbie Fowler winning a penalty for Liverpool, getting straight up and telling the ref that he tripped and that it wasn't a penalty at all. The ref refused to listen to him and gave the penalty anyway!
If the German goalkeeper had told the ref that the ball had gone in and it was a goal, they still wouldn't have given it.
spepinJun 28, 2010
Why are people disagreeing that instant replay or the ability to review certain things, is a bad idea?
It's a great idea. I'm a huge Germany fan, but totally disagree that the goal should have been disallowed. There's been a ton of other incidents where the same system could have been very effective.
It works well in a lot of sports. They could even do a challenge system like they have set up in tennis, where you get X amount per match.

World Cup needs more Vuvuzelas... and more cowbell
antp1Jun 28, 2010
This was a great article with well written and verbalized comments. Up until this section:
"WAHHHHHHH I'M AN AMERICAN AND OUR TEAM LOST AND WHY DON'T WE GET ANY REFS IN THE WORLD CUP IT'S NOT FAIR I'M GOING TO HOLD MY BREATH UNTIL THIS CHANGES AND THE US CAN COME BACK AND WIN AND BE THE BEST AT SOCCER TOOOOOOO!"
Honestly, there's been a lot worse and more influential blown calls than the ones that represent you're tiny soccer playing nation. Stop writing articles always relating it to your self. Damn
napierttJun 28, 2010
Yeah. Americans watching football for the first time should STFU.
I have great ideas for American football. Keep the action flowing. Don't stop the game every ten seconds. Get rid of the helmets and pads sissy boys. Have the players pass the ball to one another instead of just having one player throw it.
There, now American Football would be so much better.
admiralondeckJun 28, 2010
Yes, exactly. What I think we should do is slow the game down like Baseball so I can sit in the stands and get fat while watching a sport full of out of shape people stand around for 3 hours. I would welcome any number of breaks in the action so that I can eat chili dogs, spit sunflower seeds, mark up my little stat sheet, and remark about how important baseball players are in my life. I would love the chance to be able to get up and go to the bathroom, completely assured that I wouldn't miss anything exciting except maybe a player hurting his leg while attempting to jog to a base, or not hitting the ball. Surely a few minutes of time could be set aside in a soccer match for commercials, or to watch dead presidents or famous chickens run around bases.
I think it would be great.
droversoulJun 28, 2010
Can we all agree that it doesn't need cosplay?
pir80099Jun 28, 2010
I'm going to start my own international soccer association. Instant replays are welcome. It will be called "FUFIFA". Who's with me?
theanimal123Jun 28, 2010
This is long and stupid. It needs replay. And I heard Fabiano was laughing with the ref about a handball because they saw it on the screen after the fact and then they aren't 'allowed' to change their decision because FIFA lives in the 18th century and use a ridiculous tortured retarded logic to not use instant replay.
