so much wp hate from people who seem intelligent, but really seem to be going for the moron award whenever wordpress is mentioned. it's not the software's fault for people running it on a slow host -- and most importantly not using any sort of caching system. the fact is that many high traffic websites use wordpress just fine, f**k, many get front paged without so much as a hiccup, so what the f**k? god forbid someone mention something positive or relevant to the new version.
Answer to caching question : IT DOES NOT CACHE, and I could not see any reference to this in the detailed updates. Same old story then - WP pages rendered from database every single time - every element, including category listings, number of posts in categories etc. So, basically don't expect WP blogs to stand up to any kind of traffic spike whatever its hosting.
