women.timesonline.co.uk— 'Massage parlours' and even barbers have long offered men sexual stimulation. Now, word is, women are after the extras.

I'm actually pretty new to men's movement/misandry issues, so I'm probably not as articulate as I could be. It's not something I have a great deal of knowledge about, but I do feel a need to throw it out there because one aspect is the invisibility. People have become more aware of misogyny in society, and that's wonderful, but misandry is still usually denied or downplayed or people are actually incapable of recognizing it. It's pretty difficult to discuss without generalities, but that's true of any area of sociology. Truer here, because so much of the literature itself is kind of vague.Anyway, here's my advice: watch sitcoms and action movies. You'll start to notice two different male stereotypes that permeate a lot more than sitcoms and action movies--the "bad boy" and the "useless husband." The Bad Boy is more or less my example of the shrill, desperate sort of "confident" man (just to clarify, yeah, the loud, overcompensating man is the truly insecure one, and everyone knows this, but it remains a crippling gender role many men are unable to fully escape). It's essentially a parody of manhood--the athletic, sweaty, disheveled-but-handsome smart-mouthed bloke who takes charge, bosses everyone around, always gets his way and saves the day in spite of being a total bastard to anyone who has the misfortune of being in his presence. The Bad Boy exemplifies many traits of masculinity (assertiveness, courage, charm, athleticism, leadership, individualism), but blows them completely out of proportion and becomes a live action cartoon. On the flip side in sitcom world is the Useless Husband; the man of the house as bumbling idiot who's always scraped out of trouble by his resourceful, intelligent wife. The Useless Husband is a man completely robbed of any masculine traits; he's passive, cowardly, dull witted, lazy, typically fat and broken in spirit. The effect these two stereotypes have had on US culture, and the way it views men as a result, is staggering, but probably beyond my ability to articulate. So just look for them in TV/film media, get a good handle on them, and then start looking for them in the real world. More importantly, try to count the number of times in ANY movie or TV show in which a woman slaps/hits/kicks/attacks/assaults a man, and the man reacts with a sheepish, complacent grin. Now switch the sexes around and see if anyone is still grinning. Try doing this for any sort of violence or assault, real or fictional, that you see depicted, whether it's against men or women, and you'll get a good idea of the misandry implicit in society. As for value judgments, I know it isn't popular, but I do judge anyone who sleeps around, regardless of sex. That's a reckless, heartless, soulless thing to do and I lose respect for anyone who does. A lot of people feel that way, and generally the "stud" who sleeps around isn't well respected beyond high school. Still, any sort of name calling is childish, and if a promiscuous person is otherwise interesting, intelligent or talented I can respect them for that.As for the narrow range of expression men are given; that's a difficult thing to point out, but glaringly obvious to anyone who sees it. It's an incredible challenge to describe, or speculate about, but the long and short of it is that men are conditioned from a young age to have a very thick character armor, to not publicly show emotion, and this limits the way they interact with other people. And thanks for replying. Any sort of gender issues conversation necessitates a certain level of generalizing, vagueness, miscommunication and usually hair wringing, but doesn't anything worth talking about? Comments system be as it may, one thing I do like about Digg is that the comments are almost always more interesting than the articles.
