The bad part is that if they weren't sold into slavery, they would either starve or become prostitutes. There are not a lot of choices for these people, it is truly a sad story.

I do get what you're saying here, but let me say that I don't quite think that working at Burger King for 6 dollars an hour is quite the same as being a 9 year old girl being sold off to a life of rape and labor. So please, get your head out of your ass and stop thinking that us Americans have it so bad. If you work in a s**tty job that you're unhappy with, that's your choice. You have the choice to leave it, you have the choice to go anywhere and do whatever you please. Any barrier that you see is self imposed, no one is going to beat you and rape you for not sticking to the work program.

There are two nations on that island. Haiti is on one side and the Dominican Republic is on the other side. The DR is, I think, a pretty successful state. and I bet you there aren't 9 year old girls being sold to strangers there.So the question is, with the same resources, why is one nation dirt poor and chaotic and the other one a success?

That's just how the legal system works (or in this case, doesn't), if he refused to work in a prison he'd lose his prison job or maybe get solitary, if he refused to work as a slave he would be tortured and/or killed.
