For now that is the truth. In the future we would probably be better off running it in something like wine as it uses less memory... till then (unless its a game) VM is the way to go.

I think Valve does have a native steam for linux, but didn't release it so that they wouldn't have to release. Instead, they use that to help optimize steam to run in wine. I know some people don't like that, but I would rather have companies taking a "somewhat support through wine" approach than a "No linux support PERIOD" approach.
