Is anyone honestly surprised? HOLY CRAP!!! a lower memory usage operating system ( windows XP ) runs faster than windows vista with the same hardware! Stop teh presses1!11!! In terms of pure power XP is basically the best OS in terms of efficiency (No, OS 10.5 is not somehow better for pure benchmarking power ) and usability ( sorry but it's true linux users ). PS: I think apple is a fine company and I have owned 3 ipods, but when it comes down to it their prices are just too high ( For their desktops ). Consumers want cheap over a fancy OS.
I think you make a bad assumption. Linux is coming to be a much more user friendly platform. Its just different and more configurable which can be daunting.
Here is a real world example for you. I am a developer working in Windows every day, I have Vista Ultimate 64 and XP 64 on separate hard disks in my main work PC. This PC is a high spec Dell Precision 690, Xeon 2.3Ghz dual core, 4 gig RAM, NVidia Quadro 3500, 24" monitor, over £2k from Dell today. Both HDD's are the same 160gig SATA model as supplied. Even the simple operating system tasks are noticeably slower when in Vista. The most astonishing thing to me, as I regularly have to copy folders that contain just 60Mbytes in 1664 files to the same hard disk, this takes 3 seconds on XP64 and over 20 seconds on Vista! And I am not exaggerating.
It's done to be future-proof against what the MPAA may do.If in 2 years your HD-DVD's WON'T play without this kind of DRM (and don't doubt they won't), would you still be bashing Microsoft for this?
It's done to be future-proof against what hte MPAA may do. They've told MS what they're going for, and MS decided to help out their customers a bit by integrating this into their OS from the start. And furthermore, I don't understand WHY people bash MS for this? It's not intrusive, it doesn't affect you at all unless you go to play these HD media (and even then, just use an incompatable player or something to get around it).If in 2 years your HD-DVD's WON'T play without this kind of DRM (and don't doubt they won't), would you still be bashing Microsoft for this?
Just as a follow up. How many paid MS shills are there here?Microsoft has done some incredible things, but Vista isn't one of them. We in the support industry, refer to it as ME07.Some of the greatest minds on Earth, are working to make this turd float. It isn't happening. The DRM restrictions are unpalatable. TPM is a nightmare. People, the average sheep, don't want to know that the porn codec needs to be loaded, regardless of infection. The public needs education, desperately. No one's interests, except for Joe publics interests, are served by education. Many of my customers are unaware of the hardware I need to address a problem. A lady pulls into my parking lot, in her Mercedes, and procedes to hand me her monitor. "I keep getting this Virus Thingy"WTF am I supposed to do? We can't shoot everyone over 30 ( I'm 46, so don't give me that)I'm ashamed of my own generation. Most were so busy making money, they didn't learn how to stop someone from stealing it all. My brother/partner is running GG. Last week he proudly announced he could copy DVD's in Ubuntu, and as much as I need him to develop Vista expertise, he converted all 4 of his rigs to Linux. My 5 systems still run Microsoft, but for how long?
I wasn't being sarcastic. Radeon x1950 XTX, Q6600, 2GB Crucial Balistix Tracer, Abit IP35, running Vista Business x64. Every game I listed there had an improvement or the same framerates as XP x64 that I was using before (which itself had better framerates over 32-bit XP).

Not usable? I gave my grandma a system with gOS and she loves it. And she could barely use a mac.
