microsoft.com— From the new Microsoft Windows Vista Website: "A Windows Vista computer starts and shuts down as quickly and reliably as a television, typically within 2 to 3 seconds."

" Windows Vista processes login scripts and startup programs and services in the background so you can start working right away."So, what if something you want to work with depends on a mapped drive in the login script, or some other process which hasn't finished yet??Sounds like more marketing hype, just as they did with prefetch in XP.
It takes my computer at work about 20 seconds to get to the desktop. Now if you decide to click on the Start menu as soon as the desktop appears though, it takes about 3 minutes to appear (because it hasn't loaded yet.)"Boot time" to me is the time between me hitting power and me being able to USE my computer, not see the desktop. Of course, I'm not a marketing guy...
"Finally they came to their senses, something linux had since the beginning. I bet nobody runns as limited user in XP on their home machine, if this is enforced in vista it would be a good thing."I use XP as a limited user daily. Learn how to use the runas command, it works great. No viruses, no spyware, it's fantastical.
wow, only 5 million comments.. microsoft failed to say wheither or not this is after you have installed any programs, or if this is the very first boot of a fresh install on a new computer. i think both of these requirements need to be met in order for the boot time to stay low.
well... i guess it would be possible with a solid state hard drive. That would solve a huge bottleneck, but then there is still all the processing that needs to be done during boot-up that has nothing to do with loading files...
I have been running Vista on my laptop since the beta was released and as for the normal boot and shutdown it is a little bit quicker in that aspect. But then again this beta will have more added to it before final release, so it may get slower.
""Windows Vista User Account Protection bridges the gap between user and administrative privileges by running programs with limited permissions."Finally they came to their senses, something linux had since the beginning."And by "the beginning" you mean UNIX right?
Should be interesting if they can pull it off, stil can't help but think the 2-3 second rule will apply to the latest system at time of release, so I guess MS won't be lying. As long as Vista works better than it does on Beta 2 in VM - Not impressed so far!)

What they mean is that you can kick the box with your boots after taking 2 or 3 seconds to realize that Windows Vista is the same s**t, different day.
the_jakyllSep 29, 2005
As with everything else in Vista, its only a matter of time before its removed.
