XGL/compiz is great, but i wouldnt say its too far ahead of what vista has. I think the biggest thing is that compiz with aiglx runs onintel integrated graphics, even the older ones. However, beyond features/performance XGL/aiglx have hte upper hand because vista/10.5 are limitred to just one window manager. At best, youll be able to get some shareware program off the net to change the theme, but thats about it. With linux, since it is all opensource, there will be many different implementations and effects.Even now, every couple of days a new feature is added to compiz. For example, a couple days ago someone wrote a plugin that allows you to drag windows accross desktops. If you want to see how fast it is progressing, install ubuntu and xgl and play around with it. Then look at the novell demo and see how much it has changed since just last month.
I used to work there, and I have no plans to ever upgrade to it. After finishing the big project I'm on, I plan to switch java and remove my last need for Windows - C# (Yes, I'm aware of Mono).Hopefully I won't need to look back.
This is the first screenshot of Vista I've seen and I can't help but think it doesn't look that much different than Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed, save the tranparent taskbar. The split screen setup and the ugly large-arse icons are very like that which we have now. With all the hype I was expecting more of a radical change - I hate to make the comparison, but yes like there was from MacOS 9.x to MacOS X.As a security developer our company is seeding Vista, so I guess I should really download it and take a look before I comment any more. It is very hard to get a feel from just the screenshots.
Only thing eye-catching about Vista is all the silly transparency that's supposed to be 'oooo ahhhh', wincustomize circa 2001 called, they want their fanbase back. Big deal, just yet ANOTHER bloated windows version straining our hardware all to hell.

Yeah, they moved the color picker from the bottom to the top. Yeah, I'm totally serious.
