autotelic.com — Conspicuously missing from most debate over which operating systems are better is the distortions created by the existence of pirated software. Windows, and Mac OS, are effectively free in the minds of most consumers. Most debate centered around features or stability is eclipsed by the lack of money considerations in assessing user's needs.

Ya know... I see alot of people bring up the gaming issue when comparing Linux and Windows, and I don't think it's nearly as big an issue as most make out. Sure for every 10 Windows games, only 1 or 2 of them have native Linux ports, but the Mac only gets about 3 or 4 out of that 10 either. If you look at the vast majority of gamers out there they play console games, so it's really not an issue for most people. That, and in the PC gaming world, these days most people play games built on top of flash or java, which run exactly the same no matter which OS you're using ;)The 5% of computer users who also happen to be hardcore PC gamers really shouldn't be even half as much a factor as most make it out to be. Especially when you can play roughly 95% of all the Windows games under Linux whether it be via a native port, flash/java based, or thru something like Wine.

Thanks for your insights. The Linux camp could use more people like you and your approach goes a long way to convincing people to give Linux a try than technofashionistas ever could.

I believe some here have the notion that when they got their first desktop with Windows on it, they also had a silver spoon in how to use the OS. Giving a OS just a months time to decide if it's any good is ludicrous. You didn't do this with Windows I am sure.

I would love to reply to this with more effort but it seems a little to late to. Off the top of my head though Open Office office products. You say you need every feature but do you or anyone for that matter use EVERY feature?

That's the dumbest reasoning I've ever read.

Krita (photoshop), openoffice (office), kdevelop (vs), rosegarden (music). I don't know all the programs you mentioned.

Interesting..When I had freespire and XP,it was 99 % Freespire,1% Windows...When i moved to Klikit, same deal. I only used Windows for playing a couple of games and watching DVD's...Right now I just have Klikit on here..Do i have to use the command line?Very rarely...

This is what gets my goat..People try one distro,it does not work for them, they give up..Not all distros are like Ubuntu...Your millage will vary....Don't be afraid to try other distros...You can even run them live...

Interesting thoughts and a lot of good points. But, free or not, pirated or not, it comes back to does the OS support the software that you want to use. Yes open office is free, yes gimp is powerful enough for most of us. However, much like the mania over IBM clones some 20 years ago, does it run the software I want to use? That is what is on most peoples minds. If you really want to play a certain game, or run a certain application, then yes Windows or OSX is $200 better. Think of it this way... If the car you own runs on gas and holds four people, and they are sellng diesel for 2 cents a gallon, but all the diesel cars hold 2 people or less, would you buy diesel and try to run it in your gas powered car? Would you buy a diesel car and make two trips everywhere you wanted to go? It isn't about not willing to save money to run Linux, it is about doing what you want to do. I run both Linux and Windows. Because there are some programs that I want to run, that Linux just doesn't support.
