nytimes.com— Painfully visible are the inherent design deficiencies of a foundation that was never intended to support such weight. Windows seems to move an inch for every time that Mac OS X or Linux laps it.

Finally someone who actually runs both on the same hardware sharing their opinion - instead of the 'I've never used it but...' drivel that seems to be floating around.
I'm inclined to think you are full of it.An install of linux takes a few minutes and detects everything. With windows I can't even finish my install without going to my linux box and downloading the wireless drivers for that laptop (since xp doesn't have them). Then it's download my video drivers, oh, don't forget audio. And network. Gee, only 3 hours into the install and I have a plain windows box.Linux you do the install, half an hour later it's done, all apps installed, all hardware detected and configured. You hate macs for the lack of control, but prefer locked down windows over linux?Yep, yer definitely full of it.Couldn't get your SOUND working?Unless you have a totally unique setup maybe you are better off sticking with windows.
use Ubuntu with a decent graphics card.even running off the CD, desktop effects kick in and you have transparent borders, at least on inactive windows. you can always get a Vista emerald theme if you're really stuck on transparent borders.i prefer superior window management, flashy fire/water effects, reflections...oh, and did you try making an ENTIRE WINDOW transparent?yeah. just alt+scrollwheel over any window. Compiz Fusion is not "primitive" or incapable, period.oh, and youre full of BS too. Compiz Fusion manages windows. Emerald manages the window decorations ;)
oh and one more thing:"True Cost of Ownership (TCO) is what a given product actually costs to use over time"its TOTAL cost of ownership. why post a huge bloody rant on digg? Linux: cost of CD: $0.20, cost of bandwidth: $0.01. From that point on, Linux costs you nothing (except maybe another $0.01 in bandwidth for updates). with Windows, you pay for software updates to run with the latest OS (read Vista), you pay for the latest and greatest hardware because your shiny new OS cries and throws tantrums like a big baby if it doesnt have the latest stuff to play with, you pay for antivirus because the OS is too weak at the core and far too common to be anywhere near secure on it's own. OSX forces you to buy new hardware just to switch from Windows to Mac, and charges you a substantial premium over standard PC hardware for the "privelidge"...
