fsf.org — The Free Software Foundation has released a paper detailing the five actions major hardware manufacturers can take to foster a mutually beneficial relationship with the free software community: support free software drivers, end the ?Microsoft Tax?, remove proprietary BIOS locks, support a free BIOS, and reject Digital Restrictions Management (DRM)

I was informed by HP Quality Care support that upgrades for Windows XP PC's to Vista do not exist. They encouraged me not to upgrade my three Compaq servers to Vista. I was told to wait until things ' settled down' with Vista. There are no software or hardware packages available for Windows XP or previous OS systems to convert to Vista. They do not exist and there are no plans to provide them.

@fkr2:"The "Microsoft" tax that makes a new pc with windows $57 cheaper than a new pc with linux at dell?"Is it really cheaper in the long run? After the average person takes it home, what are they likely to do? Probably go out and PURCHASE hundreds of dollars in additional software for that system. Compare that to the Linux system where the average person would have tens of thousands of FREE open source applications to install whenever they want. When you really make a sane comparison, Linux is the healthier choice for your wallet.

Just bought a new Dell laptop with Vista, (just because I run a service biz and will have to help others support it.) Yikes, what a piece of bloatware! My 6 yr old laptop running PuppyLinux is faster and more reliable than my brand new dualcore, 2gb of ram monster! Please, make hardware unchained from proprietary code and legal limitations!cheers,robin850

I think Linux needs all it can get from any of the top hardware manufacturers, including Dell. This is what is going to help spread freedom to the masses unknowingly caught in the clutches of evil proprietary garbage. I see your point that Linux is great without the help from anyone and other areas need concentrated on like WiFi.I run Ubuntu on a Dell and it runs great, it runs better on a Dell then Winblows...that's the whole point of Dell & Linux lying together. It runs better on a Dell than what's pre-installed on a Dell. That's why Dell should at least try it or no install any OS at all. And I agree with all the people on here about joining the FSF at fsf.org....everyone who supports Linux should join and stand up and make a change!!!!

Ready to buy any PC (Laptop or Desktop) coming without Win. Will install Ubuntu Linux for performance and freedom of use. Plus the security and power of a Unix-based machine.

As far as the corps that support DRM go, they know exactly what they are doing. For them it is all about consumer control, and milking us for as much cash as they can. These dishonest business practices have already led me to boycott companies like Microsoft, Intel, the RIAA and the MPAA, and probably some others that I can't think of right now.Spread the word, Free Software for a Free Future!

Thumbs up. In complete agreement. Go FSF!

call me different or whatever you want, but after trying and using different OS platforms over the years, I'm on my 12th machine now, i like windows vista ultimate. i don't care what it costs. it costs whatever it costs. i designed my own machine based on the AMD Opteron 1216 Santa Ana 64 bit dual core chip. i used Linux and found it really unintuitive and very difficult to use, plus it has so many extraneous files that it took my anti-virus software over two hours just to check through my system. with vista ultimate, and the same anti-virus system, i checked over a million files in 2 terabytes of hd space in just under 2 minutes. so uhm Linux just doesn't do it for me at all. MS Vista Ultimate Rawks serious sh*t. nothing and i don't care what any of you say, nothing on the market, whether free or expensive can compare. i do like sun solaris and i use that on my workstation, but nothing but Vista Ultimate for my new file server. i respect and appreciate everyone's pov, but nothing will change the fact that on my opteron system file server no OS platform worked better than MS Vista Ultimate. i know that for a lot of people price is a major if not the major consideration, but for me, the only consideration is performance and Linux was simply out-performed on a scale of 100 to 1 against it by the Windows Vista Ultimate OS platform.
ironkojiMay 18, 2007
why does everyone seem to love Linux so much? it's full of extraneous, useless files that take up mega megabytes of space on your hard drive system. it's got thousands upon thousands of files and folders that are completely useless, many of those files are even empty! just because Microsoft is successful is no reason to diss them. i love the new Windows Vista Ultimate because it works for me. i have only owned 3 off the shelf systems of the 12 systems i've had. the other 9 i designed by myself. up until now, i swore by Intel products and designed my systems to be Intel/Microsoft smooth all the way through. recently however, i've been sold on the AMD cpus. i bought my first AMD chip just about 3 months ago and i love it! I bought the AMD Opteron 1216 Santa Ana dual core 64 bit cpu and it's some major serious hardware. nothing i've ever used comes anywhere close to its performance. this is my best system ever. i tried Sun Solaris and i tried Linux on the system, but neither of them used the optimum performance capabilities derived from this work of art cpu from AMD like the Windows Vista Ultimate OS platform. i know many of you are concerned about things like DRM and the fact that bill gates is one of the richest people in the world. so what? it's a free country and he made it using the free market system like everybody else here. he's rich now, but he didn't start out that way. if some of you are so great at criticizing MS and Mr. Gates, then how come you aren't mega-billionairs like him? the proof is in the cash register. i spent a lot of money on my new system and i'm very proud of it. i finally got the machine i wanted by designing it myself, and not compromising on anything. price was not my consideration at all, and i'm not rich either. the only consideration i had for the new system was performance and after testing and retesting with both Sun Solaris and Linux, I choose to use MS Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit for my 64 hardware platform, and it worked the best. is simply works better and faster and more intuitively than either Solaris or Linux. so for me, imho, there is no better OS platform for top drawer, top of the line, high end, high performance hardware platforms than, yes it is expensive but it works, Windows Vista Ultimate. in the end people, the old saying of you get what you pay for is true. Linux is free, Solaris less than half the cost of Vista Ultimate, but Vista Ultimate out-performed them. you do get what you pay for. stop these complaints that MS makes too much money off of people. i don't care who gets my money as long as I get what i want for my money. that's freedom. with Vista Ultimate, even at 400.00 dollars for the full version, i felt i got an incredible bargain. i tried Sun Solaris. it worked ok. i tried Linux, it couldn't keep up with my high performance hardware at all. i finally decided on Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS, based soley and only on performance. btw, talking about bargains? both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of the Vista Ultimate OS come in the same package. you get two OS's for the price of one. why do people overlook something like that? I don't care about DRMs. it doesn't bother me in the least. i love my asus motherboard and my geforce nvidia video card. they both have DRM and it doesn't bother me at all. it doesn't hurt me. i use the recommended drivers. i pay for them because other people put a lot of work and thought and care into their design and development. i am not rich, but i will do without other things just so i can have the computer system i want. the computer system i have now. some people on this site may not like it, but hey, you didn't pay for my system. you don't have the same needs as i do. i paid for my system based on the needs i have for its use. i paid. not you. that's my freedom.

@ o0splitpaw0o hey i use only 2 gigs of the Kingston ddr2 super sdram for my 64 bit opteron file server that i just designed and built 3 months ago and the Windows Vista Ultimate works beautifully on the 2 gigs. yes i realize the ram i got is the best and fastest on the market, and yes it's expensive too, but even so, my Vista Ultimate works great on 2 gigs. you really do not need 4 gigs at all for the OS. i am going to add in another 2 gigs next month, but for reasons other than the needs of Vista Ultimate. it really doesn't need 4 gigs and works just fine with 2.
