giantrealm.com— If there was one major disappointment of the past console cycle - that of the Xbox and PlayStation 2 - it was that it was over so quickly.

I know what you mean with that. I JUST got Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PSX because I was dying to play Chrono Trigger on something other then a ROM. I've already logged 15 hours into the game and I am just counting down the minutes until I get out of work and can play until the wee hours of the morning tonight. I also just restored a Commodore 64, a 1541 Floppy drive and a Datasette drive. I have about 60 games total now and I am loving every minute of it. I also have a Wii, a 360, a gaming PC, and I am about 2 weeks away from a PS3 (for the Blu-Ray player more then anything, but I LOVE me some Gran Turismo)
"Because when you see it, you will turn 360 degrees and walk away."Yeah, except the part where they don't walk away and buy it because it's an awesome game machine with awesome games.
Look. I used to work in the ad industry. When I first got to the agency Sony was a client and had just launched the PS2. Not to long after they decided to go in another direction so we pitched Microsoft for the Xbox 1 business and won it. Working with the marketing guys I learned a number of things about reasons for a new console. The biggest being timing. So why will there not be an Xbox 720 in 2011?1. Economy. Unless you can build your business on early adopters (they don't have money right now either) you are not going to sink millions into making a console. Companies always lose money on every console they sell for the first number of years because the tech is expensive. Over time they can make things smaller and cheaper. They rely on game sales to make money. This is not the time for that.2. Way to many units in homes right now. So why launch another console when you have over 30 million plus Xbox 360's and PS3's in homes currently. People have paid big money for these consoles and bought a slew of games. Backwards compatible or not this is not the time to ask for another what $599 for a console. Nothing starts at $299.3, 3D? And what is the penetration of 3d televisions in the consumer marketplace? Very low. We went through the consumer update to flat screen stage during the xbox and ps2 faze. Most people have already upgraded and are not going to go any pay another $2000 + for a tv just to play 3d games or watch movies. That cycle will be another 2 years when 3d sets drop in price match todays $1600 - $2500 for sets 46 - 55+ inches.4. New Xbox 360 design, Move, and Kinetic. All of these things did not happen on a whim. They realize the industry is not in a place to make a lot of money on consoles right now with the economy. These technologies will be big with the next gen. but right now they are being used to expand the current console cycle and create another channel to create profit. Worked for Wii so lets go get some of that money on our consoles. The newly designed 360 is a testement to "I guess we won't be launching a new console this year like we might have planned so what else should we do?"5. Planned titles release date. Well just go online and look at the list of games coming into next year. That does not scream new consoles.I could go on with reasons but you get the idea.Lastly to people asking about Blu-ray in the 360. Come on.Sony owns the technology. It more that anything has helped them gain ground on the 360 (only about 500,000 consoles apart worldwide now) more than anything else in this high definition era. So why would you then sell the one thing that truly differentiates yourself from your competition to your competition. No one is that dumb. Like being Honda and creating a 400hp engine that can go 1000miles on 1 tank of gas and then selling it to Toyota and GM to put in their cars as well.Anyone sitting and thinking about if they should buy a Ps3 now or new 360 or wait because they do not want to get burned. You will be waiting unitl at least 2012 I think. So go for it.Last thing. Pet peeve to Microsoft and Sony. I know you both compete. I know you both try to outmatch the other in terms of features and games. But stop with this new version of a console every year. Of course if one of you does something like includes wifi and the other did not then you are going to include wifi in the next model. But you are only spitting in the face of people that have paid hundreds of dollars (especially early adopters) and been loyal to you. It is like those commercials from the insurance company depecting new people being treated better than old customers. Foolish. Either get it together at the beginning and stick with the console you built or give early purchasers credit or discounts towards things like wifi adapters so that they can upgrade to as close as they can to the new systems. So many xbox owners I know (especially after the red ring fiasco. I went through 4 consoles. On my second ps3) are angry when they see the new console with the wifi built in, 3 or 4 hdmi ports, exclusive kinetic connection etc...Just don't punch your ride in the stomach or you might now get back home again.Enjoy life.

So does that mean we are going to see better games? We ALL know that the more power you get out of a system, the better the games, right?
