Does having your phone constantly connected to the internet so you can receive calls have and effect on battery life? I'm really interested in a Skype-based cell phone, but so far I have found a few kinks.1. I can't connect on campus because it requires browser authentication. If I do use a device with a browser, most campuses ban Skype now.2. Staying connected either via wifi or 3G seems to destroy battery life and you need to stay connected to receive calls.3. Receiving calls in general.I tried an older program called Frug or something on the iPod touch that allowed me to sometimes make calls, but I could never understand how receiving would work since I could not stay connected to the internet.

Me, too. Any industry that is not "impaired" will inevitably become a threat. There is no exception to that rule.

Search amazon for Macally iPod Audio Recorder. It's 20 bucks and works great. Considering it can be the difference between 40-50 bucks a month for service compared to calls that are 2 cents a minute, the initial investment can be worth it.

...and Skype is only the beginning. I've been seeing Gizmo and GoogleTalk on some protos. Actually, I think Gizmo is already out on some models.

No, they will just charge more for Internet, expose more Caps, and even possibly charge for using a VOIP server and possible calling it a "Data Intensive" service.
