Tried to Digg you for that 'cos it bugs the crap out of me as well, but kept getting 'Token appears to be invalid' errors. Fortunately in the UK Amazon uses Royal Mail, so if you miss something you just go to the Post Office and pick it up.Other online stores use courier companies that engage in exactly the same behavior you described. Or tell you you can pick up the parcel from their 'local' office, in an industrial estate on the outskirts of a city an hours train ride away.Get most of my stuff delivered to work now, saves the hassle.
