Google is getting into the content business. Knol is identical to About.com, where a freelancer provides content about a subject, About.com publishes it, and they split the revenue. Has anyone ever heard About argue that it's not in the publishing business and competing with other publishers ? Knol is really an indictment of Google's search engine. It is an acknowledgment that most people cannot easily find quality information in search results. This is why we're seeing a slew of human-powered efforts such as Mahalo, FindingDulcinea, ChaCha and others that provide hand-selected links for a topic.
