geek.pandemonium.de — As there was no clear-cut statement on the issue that I could find, I did the obvious thing and asked Nintendo support whether the Wii is region-locked or not. Their reply? No, but the PAL Wii and the NTSC Wii will not play each other's games. Not perfect, but this means the US *should* be able to play Japanese games for example.

for the record -- the video where they try to break the Wii also shows the usage of a tool to play import Gamecube games -- I assume that the import Gamecube games won't work, only the import Wii ones will.

A very good move on there part. Having a console region locked is giving people a very good reason to hack it.

It's a shame, I'm in the UK and the majoritry of DS games I get are US imports, they come out quicker and are cheaper. Also Osu Takke Ouenden is fantastic even if Elite beat agents is out now you really need the manic J-Pop version. If people now want to play import games on the wii someone will more than likely come up with a chip which will in turn also enable piracy. It would make more sense to ship the consoles region free and there would be no incentive to buy some form of way around it that could help the pirates. The other answer of course would be to just not have ridiculous wait times between regions.

Mind you I used an action replay to make my gamecube region free very very easily (well not really make the console region free but I could play any game from any region)

Hay i was wondering if anyone knew if the Wii (in Australia, or anywhere really) was also capable of playing NTSC games as well as PAL. The television is not the issue here (as it will play both NTSC and PAL). So if anyone knows if the Wii is capable of playing both that would be great to find out.
