gamingtarget.com — Nintendo's fourth quarter release calender came with a cryptic message attached, "Perhaps the secret to the launch information for Wii is somehow encoded in the text of this news item", and the release date points logically to October 2nd.

of all the release date hype seen over the past few months, this one seems the most logical.

Nintendo has no love for Sony. The Wii's release date has no effect on Microsoft since their launch is long passed. Sony on the other hand knows that the Wii's launch will have an impact on the Sony launch.Nintendo is exacting passive-aggressive revenge against Sony for screwing them for the PS1. Sony was working with Nintendo to launch a console; Sony bailed and produced their own. Back stabbing bastages. They are companies with goals of being profitable or get a leg up in a particular forum but Sony has shown it's blatant greed in the past two years: root kits, Sony MMORPGs screwing players by giving horid service, screwing the rumble creators out of money, copying the motion controller without giving Nintendo credit for bundling it in a console, ramming the unnecessary blu-ray down our throats, etc.Screw you Sony!! I hope the PS3 is in third place and they learn a lesson.Wii FTW!!!

The whole roman numerals theory is clever. Sounds like something Nintendo would do. Only problem with October 2nd, is that it is a Monday. Nintendo has always released their consoles on Sundays.

the roman numeral makes prefect sense! Wii= V V I I = X II = OCt 2!1and beside i think Nintendo isnt goignt to worry about braking traditions! they re redefining gaming who cares if the other systems came out on a sunday! OCTOBER 2!!

One other thing that may add support to the Roman numeral theory. Although it may have only been the version of the press release I saw, wasn't Final Fantasy V in all capitals? I think it was the only game displayed completely capitalized...and also the only one with a Roman numeral.
