wiinewz.com — A method for backing up Nintendo Wii games, using an LG-8164b or LG-8163b DVD-ROM drive, has been found. The process is slow but it is confirmed working. Running the DVDInfo application to allow read access to the disc and using a collection of "rawdump" apps, a Wii game disc can be backed up in around 50 hours.

I will say this: Obviously, if you are using this tech to honestly backup your game discs that you obtained through legitimate means, that's fine, the problem I have with this is that it opens the door for the, I would say probably 80% or more, of people who use this as a way to pirate games. Again, not going to change the fact that it will happen, but I think it probably does hurt the industry from a financial standpoint when it happens. Would it lower prices in the retail channel if it didn't? Probably not, no, but as an Amiga owner who understands that while software piracy wasn't the entire reason the system failed miserably, it didn't help the situation that 15-30 guys would all meet up once a month for the sole purpose of making copies of each other's software.I know I pigeon-holed some legitimate people who back up their bought copies of games tho, and I apologize for that.

Good, it will be worth it to ensure Wii Sports never needs to be replaced. Wii Sports gets used a lot on my Wii and its in that cardboard case, there are already scratches all over the disk.

The long backup time came from having to use debug commands in the LG firmware (which I guess are not optimized). It'll really get interesting once people start rolling their own firmwares capable of reading these discs with less hassle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you might be able to get up from your desk and do something else while your computer is ripping the disc.

This is a nice step forward, like Dustyb said, I need to back up my copy of wii sports. It won't last forever.

I wish I could legally make back up copies of my underwear. They are constantly developing holes in them.

Ok, all you people are saying that this opens up a way for Crackers and the such to pirate games. This is not so, also, this metho is redundant in backing up games too. The Wii's Optical Disc drive reads from the outer rim into the centre, the exact opposite of nearly every other drive. This means that when you put your backed up game into the disc, it wil be read backwards. Thats right folks, all those people who have backed up their entire wii game collection have just wasted 50 to 1000 hours of their lives. To play these 'backed up' games you are going to have to mod your wii with a chip like a xenowii mod chip which controls the laser, now anyone who has wasted (oops WAITED) months to get their wii is not going to risk that £180 and 6 months to play a back up worth £35. forget this dumper ever existed. (oh and did i mention that the modded chip costs quite a lot too).Hope this could be of srevice.

ha.. u know nothing of twilight hack??? u need to research before u answer! Use twilight hack and bootloader to play iso backups... only conflict is the internet: it needs to be disabled for ur wii or Nintendo will brick u (apparently). Also if ur wii firmware is past 1.3.3 or somthing like that u cant do hack, but its a soft-mod, no f**king with ur wii's sensitive hardware. look it up on utube!
