pcworld.com — The next time you run a scan with your anti-spyware tool, it might miss some programs. Some adware companies, arguing that their software is benign, have petitioned anti-spyware firms to stop warning consumers about their software. Other companies have resorted to sending cease-and-desist letters that threaten legal action.

Sort of like TV companies arguing for on screen ads due to Tivo use. Tivo is bad because you can skip the comercials. Oh no... Maybe if they spent those millions on making a decent product they would not have to run and ad every six minutes.

Rotten bastards. Why are they giving in they should fit the dogs off. Not whack them off. I wouldnt care about adds, but now ads for products have to be a short movie, there is always some storyline that has nothing to do with them. "Oh, hi grandma, how are you feeling to day", "Im fine, I just went outside and took a dump!", "Good, these bounty paper towels are amazing!" Quicker picker-upper Bounty!

Nice to see a story that isn't a link to someone's blog. Ben Edelman, the guy in the article, is pretty hard core about spyware. His personal webpage makes for interesting reading.

if this starts to occur more often someone will simply develop an open source antispyware program and the users themselves will decide what is a usefull program and what is an infection of useless junk.

One big problem glossed over in the article is that spyware companies themselves are now producing spyware removal tools. Once on your system they remove their competitors products, then lock their products on to your computer so they are almost impossible to remove. Also there are many spyware tools which are completely fake. Some of the nastiest get on to your computer via a drive-by downloader, give you a list of false positives, charge you $30 to remove fake results, then actually put more spyware on your our system as a final insult.I would highly recommend checking out Spyware Warrior's website which has a great list of fake/suspect anti-spyware tools.
