sfgate.com — Who are these people? At any given hour on any given workday, well, it turns out it's not a workday at all. Not for these hordes roaming free, anyway. I didn't doubt that the packers had sound explanations. I just wanted to hear them.

If people around your neighborhood keep robbing you heres what you do.1. Put bars on the windows.2. Rig shotguns on your doors that goes off whenever someone tries to break in.3. Keep a CC license because chances are someone will be very pissed thattheir relative was killed by you.4. Post pics on Digg!

Wow-this might be the most contentious comment page I've seen. And every one one of us sitting on our collective ass as we type.

I looked outside my window and thought, how come there's almost nobody out there? Is everyone at work? Why do people have to work so much?I realized that people only work if they need money. So, why don't all those people(that I don't see) have any money? I needed to find out, so I went downtown to thelocal casinos. There were lots of workers there and they were easy to talk to.The first lady I talked to said she needed to work a lot to pay for her kids. Shehad FOUR kids and her husband had died a few years ago. Sad really, but I asked herwhy she had so many kids. She just looked at me funny and walked away. Oh well...The next person I talked to seemed more promising. He was a younger man, with nokids or real responsibilities. He said "I don't have many expenses, but I still haveto work 50+ hours a week just to get by. It's just really hard to make it alone on $8.00an hour...".After talking to a few more people, I started to feel like a deadbeat. I mean, how canI possibly feel right about not working my butt off all week, when these people work sohard and barely get by? So I started thinking, just what is it about my lifestyle thatmakes it so I can get by only working a few days a week? So, I made a budget and started going over my expenses. I began to realize, that I hadvery few expenses compared to most of the people I talked to. But just how did thathappen? Well, let's see.... I own my own home, or rather I inherited it from my family. So that cuts out rent almost completely. I don't need a car, since I live so close to town,I just walk around to get what I need. I work from home, so commuting isn't a problem. What else don't I need that other's do? Oh, I have no kids, which I hear are a HUGE expense. I don't have cable or satellite T.V. (but I do have the interweb!). I don't goout and eat, since I LOVE to cook. I have no vices, except maybe my computer, so notobacco or alcohol expenses. Since I work out daily, I'm in great shape, so I almostnever end up in the Doctors office. I started to think that maybe all those other people were just really, really unfortunate. But not everyone could be in such a bad predicament, there had to be some otherdifference. What was it that I had that they didn't? I am married, and many of thepeople I talked to were single. So that seemed like a huge advantage right there. I thought about the wages that other people make and why they varied so much. Thepoor kid that worked 50+ hours a week seemed so depressed, like someone had justreached into his backpack and took his lunch money. That's when I realized, someone didjust that. He makes so much less money than me because he works for someone else.See, I work for myself so I have almost no overhead so just about every penny I make goes to me. WOW, imagine if everyone worked for themselves and didn't just give their money to other people! I bet nobody would have to work all week long.Yes, this IS a parody or sorts. But with the advent of current technology, there's NO reasonpeople should have to work so hard. People keep the same work hours today that they did hundreds of years ago, yet things are FAR easier to accomplish in the here and now. So just where does all that extra money go anyway? I know it's not in YOUR wallet...

There is no hate involved here for me. Personally, if it works for you, go for it. But there are those of us who *thrive* in a 9-5 environment. It works for us. Neither of us is superior to the other, simply different. So in the meanwhile, you do your thing, and we'll do ours.

The number of people obviously lacking a sense of humour was missed out too.
