pickthebrain.com — The Natural Productivity CycleIn your personal life, when attending to business or working on side projects, how often do you spend 8 consecutive hours in front of a computer? It doesn’t make sense because we lose the ability to concentrate effectively within a few hours.Everyone goes through alternating periods of high and low mental acuity. T

I do agree that it's not essential that everyone work in the office all the time, working in the office establishes a sense of community between office mates. I may be the exception, because I enjoy the people I work with.

I'd rather just work til 7pm and get home in 15 minutes, than leave at 5 or 6 and spend an hour and a half in the car

In some cases, this is already happening. My wife works for a very large financial company in the Financial District here in NYC. She can work from home most days where she doesn't have any meetings. She logs in on her home PC, and see's her desktop at her work PC. Her job does allow this as all she does is verify (via e-mails, rarely phone calls) and allocate money for invoices that are on a database in .pdf form.I do think this will take off some because as companies realize how much money they can save on not renting office space, especially in areas like NYC where renting office space by the foot can equal renting an entire building in Kansas. Factor in utility bills, and companies can save even more. Plus, if the global warming people are correct, I can even forsee the goverment offering incentives to companies to get their employees to work from home to ease traffic congestion and traffic pollution.Of course, I don't think this will be done in a year or two. I think companies will feel more comfortable in implementing ideas like this once they have ways of be secure in thatA) the work is getting doneB) they can protect their information as it travels outside their office walls

Will the corporate sector ever convince us to abandon our "luxurious lifestyle of the pampered western worker"? Did we perhaps already abandon it?

That's because you're a compulsive gambler and would be uncomfortable if you weren't making wagers every waking hour of the day!

um, it's a way of the past because of outsourcing... they are very adament about outsourcing *any* department that doesn't require strong communication skills or critical business operations. You should read up about it, the entire "office" will be much more a thing of the past in decades, not because of working from home, but outsourcing. Google it, research.... it's pretty interesting.

9 to 5 doesn't exist. it's 8-6 nearly across the board at most 'leisurely' companies, any company with pressure, expect 8-9 or even 8-11 often.the hours demanded of you are worse if the company knows you are single and without a family, so my advice is lie and say you have a wife and children, soccer games, that whole shpiel

That would be nice, but I'd be far less productive. For me, I have just a certain number of productive hours a day, something less than 8. For me to be more productive, I should work 6 days of six (or 5) hours each, instead of five days of 8 or longer hours. I'd put in fewer hours overall, but get more done. Of course it would add to my weekly commuting time...
