Yeah, seems to be an american thing. Over here (i live in a s**tty eastern european country), its 10$ for 1GB. I think unlimited will be something like 20$ when they implement it. The speeds are 3G

Nationalize wireless Internet at broadband speeds and offer it for free. The ISP's and cell phone providers can charge for higher bandwidth services. That would be a dramatic infrastructure change that would transform our economy and spur innovation.

usb tethering works no problem, but some older phones like say 2 yrs ago choke with bluetooth, even though bluetooth has a theoretical speed it does not always work properly, it drops sometimes. i used to work for sprint and we used to bluetooth tether our laptops while we were at work on a slow day. my mac my co-workers pc. connection software 2 yrs ago used the modem baud preferences which limited the throughput speeds compared to a dedicated EVDO modem. there is a difference with tethering the author was partially right, don't go bashing the author because of this, he makes a valid point.the telecoms should not be charging these exuberant prices for a dedicated EVDO modem, their data networks have been paid for with our expensive voice plans that barely put any strain on their networks. if u do the math per each customer over a 2 year period it adds up to a pretty penny and is enough money to operate the network efficiently with plenty of money left over. the telecoms are greedy and dont deserve as much money as we give them.now sprint has taken up a new business model with XOHM (wimax). no contracts and a cheaper rate plan with higher speeds. one of the rate plan even allows you to have a home wimax modem and a portable wimax modem on the same rate. something like $50 a month for both. even if u do not need to use it all the time u will be able to by a wimax modem and pay on a daily basis. this is the future for wireless, its just taking to long to get there.

Tethering! LOL! I was doing this in Australia eight years ago with a GSM phone! The only thing that has changed is the transfer speeds have improved with time and someone's given it a industry buzz word to make it sound cutting edge. Lame.

Somebody should write an article titled:"Why all reporters are short sided and ignorant".

I'm in Australia now and could do with something for those occassions when I'm not near a wifi spot. Something similar to the PAYG O2 data bolt-on in the UK if you know it as I don't want to sign a twelve month deal.Any Aussies got any recommendations? I just got here and seen plenty of adverts promising freedom (bloke in VW camper with surfboard, which is exactly what I'm after) and good deals but then the small print says you need a 3 year fixed line contract to get the mobile deal. WTF? Freedom my arse.

Thank you! It is so stupid that I pay an extra $30 every month for Blackberry data plan with Verizon. Mandatory I might add, and then they want to gouge me for another $30 to tether! My home internet is $30 a month, it is over 10mbps and I can connect whatever the hell i want to it! *Bastards* Love, Zac
