macenstein.com — In order to reach this insane number, they factor in 2-years of service into the price. That is perhaps one of the stupidest and most misleading arguments a tech journalist can make. You might as well add sales tax and the cost of the gas you used driving to the Apple Store to the ?shocking? costs.

I didn't say you had to buy service to buy a cellphone. I just said that the phone needs service. Go buy and unlocked cell phone that you found on the intertubes. now don't buy any service for that cellphone. Now make a call. What happened? Like I said, maybe it still has features that work, but it's not a cellphone till you buy service with some carrier

Maybe the sales tax should be part of the sale price. If it's a sales tax, shouldn't the company selling the item be paying for it directly instead of the customer? Yeah, it gets passed on, but it's a truth in advertising thing. It's not a purchase tax, and if it says 99 cents on the tag, it damn well better not cost $1.07 when I get to the checkstand. Is Oregon the last sane state?

Come on, most people buying phones (including most IT managers) don't understand TCO; let alone what the letters mean. If they did, there would be more Linux in the world and Windows would not exist.

My Windows Mobile 5 phone (HTC3300) was free with a 12 month contract at £35 ($71) each month. TCO of £420 ($852). I have built in GPS and sat nav software included and have lots of minutes and texts plus 20MB of data each month. Is the UK just a lot cheaper than the US for mobile phones?
