npr.org— The IRS recommends that taxpayers file electronically, but it refuses to set up its own Web portal to receive the filings because of pressure from the tax-preparation industry.

Are you an idiot? The government already has that infrastructure in place to accept e-filings from the tax preparers. The issue is that some people get to use the system for free and some have to pay.
Why dont we all just change the entire mess - the tax code is what, over 60,000 pages now? I sure cant understand the half of it.... can you?Getting rid of the whole mess and going to the Fair Tax System <a class="user" href="http://www.fairtax.org">http://www.fairtax.org</a> will effectively nullify this argument, rid us of special interest, adn do wonders to curb illegal immigration (they simply loose any incentive to come here illegally then).
uh, it can be done for free, you just get kicked to a turbotax or an equivalent site, and there is no charge, at least for the 1040EZ, that is. Just did mine, and got my return in less than 2 weeks
So they want us to e-file, we have to do so through a paid service, and then Intuit, for example, can't handle the load. I spent 3 hours last night trying to e-file through Intuit and kept getting messages saying the server was busy, try later. Finally had to round up stamps, envelopes, etc. and make a last minute dash to the post office to file on paper.
Comments that refer to a "progressive flat tax" display the clueless-ness of the writer. A FLAT take is NOT progressive (or regressive), it's FLAT. That means everyone pays the same tax rate regardless of income. FWIW, is is really fair for someone who earns $20,000 to pay 10% of their income, if someone who earns $2,000,000 also pay 10%. Granted, the person who earns $2M will be paying a lot more money, but they also have a lot to begin with. The person earning $20K is probably just squeaking by - thier 10% ($2K) may be the difference between food/no food, heat/no heat... the person earning $2M the choice may be between 2 weeks/3weeks in Paris, Jaguar/Ferrari, etc. In my mind, I think below $50K - no income tax, and the marginal rates should be $51-75K 10% tax, $76-100K 15%, $101-200K 20%, and the rate should increase by 5% for each $100K topping out at 95%.

If your agi (adjusted gross income-that is, the amount of taxable income you've earned) is less than $15,000, you CAN e-file for free. Check this link to see if you may qualify: <a class="user" href="http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html">http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html</a>

When I first heard of this I thought it was crazy. But it's awesome! There are hidden taxes that we all pay. This bill is gaining momentum becuase it cuts through all the crap and creates a revenue-neutral personal consumption tax. Check out <a class="user" href="http://linder.house.gov/index.cfm?Fuseaction=Resources.Home&Resource_id=1">http://linder.house.gov/index.cfm?Fuseaction=Resources.Home&Resource_id=1</a> - let's make this easier! Anyone else heard of H.R. 25 ?
