Actually that Ambrose Bierce quote was first mentioned on TDS by one of Jon's guests a few weeks back and he had a pretty good laugh about it. So it seems they just worked it into a later show in his monologue and hoped nobody would remember. Which seems to be the case. :P
Uh...remember how the UK set out on colonisation expeditions back around when America was discovered? Same deal as New Orleans which was "discovered" by the French. Dude, don't they teach you this stuff in schools over there? Simple; most of the commanders who colonised a certain place after landing named it after either their home town or another town from the country they were from.
