gizmodo.com — The process of buying a refurb and a used car are actually very similar?except the financial risk we take on with the latter is generally much, much higher. So why are we so hung up on this? We shouldn't be?and here is why.

It has been my experience that manufacturer warranties from the big names are generally pretty good. Store warranties are generally a joke though.

Very well thought out/written article.. Refurb'ed Dell laptops are the only kind I buy.. My current one is a Vostro 1400 (Core2Duo/2GB/320GB/nvidia video/wifi/webcam/bluetooth) all for $549. The same built-to-order system would have cost me nearly $800.. This unit was a "scratch and dent".. I've been using the system now since Feb 08 and I honestly cant see anything on the unit that I'd call a scratch or a dent.. The unit came with the same warantee as a new-built system. Oddly enough, the outlet listing for the system stated XP home, but when I recieved it, it was Vista/Business.. No matter, because its now running Ubuntu 8.04, and since the Vostro 1400 is essentially the same as an Inspiron 1420, which is one of the systems Dell preloads Ubuntu on, the Ubuntu install was a piece of cake.. Everything worked right out of the chute... Very nice machine, cant beat the price...

Website mentions Dell's Outlet, but doesn't mention Dell's "secret" site, Dell Financial Services Direct Sales, their site that sells even cheaper laptops than the Outlet. They're previously leased to business customers like corporations and hospitals.http://www.dfsdirectsales.com
