networkworld.com — Ron Barrett has whooped up a firestorm with his blog post "Why Windows 7 Will Crush Linux" but Linux isn't going away anytime soon. (That's not to say W7 won't be a success.) Some reasons more folks will fall in love with Linux: Free beer is, well, free. Upgrades are up to you. Linux and Mac crowds have banded together.

To quote Ghandi:?First they ignore you, (up until around 1999) then they laugh at you, (as recently as 2005 maybe) then they fight you, (Windows 7) then you win.?

"No one ever thought that Windows 7 would kill off Linux."Actually... one guy did. This article was written as a response to another article on the same site titled "Why Windows 7 will crush Linux."<a class="user" href="http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/37086">http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/37086</a>

Windows 7 won't kill Linux, but it'll continue to keep it straggling behind like it always has. In about five years, it'll still be in the same position or less so, maybe having gotten some more of the interface advances that XP and Vista have right now. But hell, they still can't even do fonts as well as Windows, so I won't hold my breath for anything revolutionary. Everyone fights and forks projects off in the open-source world, so nothing ever gets accomplished within a decent time frame. For servers though, it'll still truck along just like it always has, because that's where it shines.

Agree that open source may fail, but the source code remains free and if some lines are worth it, it will be reused. The project as a project may die, but the source code won't (if good enough).I think the linux kernel has enough good code to ensure it will survive for a long time, even beyond Windows.....

Funny, I've been using linux with a gui desktop on multiple monitors for more than eight years. I am now.I hadn't realised it didn't work until now, thanks for the heads-up.

How? Microsofts own app to do it sucks balls.I would really appreciate it if you pointed me to an app on Windows that works as well as Compiz Fusion's Wall plugin, preferabbly paired with the Scale plugin. Then I wouldn't have to cringe every time I use Windows.

You haven't heard? Microsoft Windows and Norton Antivirus had pretty much a war on seeing who could control the software.
