pcmech.com — The other day I got into a somewhat heated discussion about why Linux is a viable alternative desktop OS. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to move the other side past the rhetoric and myths that seem to surround Linux. It is because of this discussion that I am writing this…as a way to give accurate information.

But Linux comes with all of the necessary dev tools for you to write your own games! signed,Typical Linux Fanboy

Before I say anything, let me just say that I'm not one of those people telling everyone to run Linux, but I am going around saying Linux is f**king awesome, but not necessarily for everyone. The question is not "does Linux support X?" but rather "does X support Linux?" Same thing when you're using a Mac. Yes, Windows is dominant hence why most hardware supports it. Alternatives just aren't going to get the same kind of support because the manufacturers just don't bother. So if you're using an alternative, you have to choose hardware that supports that alternative. As for your 5 year old camera, chances are it is supported, especially if its your typical camera that mounts as a drive and not some weird proprietary s**t. In fact, older hardware tends to have better Linux support than newer hardware, which actually gives it an advantage over Vista. Vista has nonexistant support for many older hardware products and crummy support for newer hardware (though the latter not necessarily Microsoft's fault).Linux is probably best for developers, hackers, geeks, and freedom-loving hippies. For most everyone else there is OS X. For those that want to play games and only want to run one operating system and refuse to dual boot, yeah, you're stuck using Windows; but you're also limiting yourself.

I don't have a clue about the Linux world? OK, sure, whatever. I guess that was some other operating system I've been administering professionally for the past 10 years or so.

You are indeed a rarity.I find it hilarious that MS went out and made what is by all accounts quite a powerful shell (Monand, or whatever they are calling it now) when the vast majority of their customer base avoids the command line at all costs. The number one complaint I hear from Windows users who don't like linux, "Ew! Comand line! Ew! Keep it away from me!"

The shuttle's OS is part of their Primary Avionics Software System or PASS. The OS is the Flight Computer Operating System (FCOS of course). It does indeed run on a variant of Unix.

Not sure why Brandaho's being dugg down here, he actually raises an interesting point; I've never seen a penguin's c**k.

Yeah, last I heard X-Fi still has nada as far as driver support goes, but that's not exactly a totally system crippling thing. If none of the cds are booting, you could just need to tell it noapic or noacpi, I had to do that to get my gear working. Nvidia card shouldn't give you any trouble, but knowing what errors you ran into would be really helpful. Give me a shout if you want any help w/ getting fedora or *buntu going, those are really the only two I've worked with recently (aside from RHEL/CentOS).

way to f**k up the quote, mokodoSome people, when confronted with a problem, think “I know, I’ll use regular expressions.” Now they have two problems. —Jamie Zawinski, in comp.lang.emacs

While many will say that the problem is a lack of apps on Linux that provide the same functions as those on Windows, I've found that there is a bigger problem facing us. That is the fact that people seem to hate learning new things. I know plenty of people who act like they were born knowing how to use Windows, but would rather saw off their own legs than learn even the simplest task in Linux. We have to get past the laziness and extreme unwillingness to learn something new before we can get people to transition to Linux en masshttp://www.ShoppersNetwork.info
