chicagotribune.com — Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is two years older than Kennedy was when he became president at age 43. Yet many people wonder whether Obama is ready to assume the responsibilities of the presidency. I believe he is ready, and here's why

McCain won't run as vice president. Ever. Now McCain/Giuliani I could see.I wouldn't be too surprised to see Obama running as vice president with someone. I'm not sure who he'd most likely run with, but I bet it wouldn't be Hillary Clinton. I could see him running with either Edwards, Biden or perhaps even Kerry.

There is nothing strange about that at all. It's simply a question of where you draw the line. No one, not even the NRA lobbyists, think that "the people" should be allowed to own nuclear bombs, for example. Obama has a perfectly reasonable position on this, which, like many of his others, doesn't fit neatly with the stereotypical positions of the right or the left.

but that's exactly what makes him a viable candidate. How many politicians actually step up to the plate when they are given 'their moment'. For him to be still riding the momentum from that speech is huge. When's the last time you remembered anything that Hillary has said? It's called leadership. His position as president isn't to get things done; it's to delegate to those who can get things done, to guide and inspire... to lead. The American public has seen so much of scandal and incompetence that they think negatively or don't even know when someone appears on the political landsscape who has a head on their shoulders. I for one want a clean slate in the White House. He may have political inexperience (and I'm not even sure that can be considered a true statement), however, he's grounded and lives by principles that I can relate to. That's huge to me. He's not buddy buddy with a Haliburton crook. I actually think he's got a conscience and would be a great wake up call to America. I also think that this will force the race issue to the forefront in the American discourse and flush out the white supremacist losers and expose them for what they are.

I would vote for him in a heartbeat. Even though he does not have much experience, I am not sure many things can prepare you for this post 9-11 world. He is able to bypass party lines, and even though he is black, I believe that there are enough sane people to realize that skin color really does not play into competency/intelligence at all. For Obama to run for President in 08, he will have to have a southern democract as the VP. With liberals and urban areas supporting Obama, and a southern candidate like Edwards getting votes from the south, there is an actuality of something like this coming to fruition. But before we get ahead of ourselves, this upcoming mid-term election will give us a clue of how things have changed in this country. If there is not a significant majority win for Democrats, I do not know what else has to be done for the people of this country to realize that conservative leadership is not leading us in the right direction. Having the support of other nations and being truthuful and honest are core policies in government, and this conservative administration has not espoused those ideals one bit. If there is a significant swing this upcoming election, an Obama or Edwards presidential bid and win can be actually thought of as happenning. But, all depends on this mid-term election...this is the test where we learn where the heart of this country lies. If this nation votes conservative once again, the USA will never be a progressive nation because there can never be more evidence as these past six years of how conservative leadership taking this nation on the completely wrong course. I guess its just a waiting game...

Obama has quite a bit of good faith among Republicans, which could translate into votes. During his senatorial run, he spoke at the University of Illinois. Former Rep governor Jim Edgar introduced him as a "fine son of Illinois". Edgar did not associate himself the Rep ultraconservative candidate. Edgar was a moderate republican who won his gubernatorial reelection here with a higher margin than any other governor ever in the history of Illinois. His view of Obama mirrors many moderate Republicans. Unless the Republicans can truly move to the center, they will have a hard time getting much more than their base if Obama is running.Political machinations aside, Obama is intelligent, articulate, and thoughtful. These are traits I like to see in any president. Obama would have my vote for president - unless the Republicans can come up with someone to match his intelligence and moderate politics....maybe Governor Edgar?
