torrentfreak.com — Piracy is not all that bad for musicians. In fact, research has shown that less popular artists actually profit from piracy. This can be concluded from, and is supported by several studies. Frustrated as they are, the music industry claims that they lose millions a year due to piracy, but is this really the case?

@mcatrageI use http://www.last.fm to find new music. I just traverse my neighbors or click bands and then click through the similar artists. There's lots of wonderful music coming out. There's just so much to filter through, it can be very time-consuming.

Is it reasonable to ask if the supporters of piracy wouldn't mind others downloading their credit-card details to try them out? It's essentially the same thing after all - taking digital data you have no right to and using it for selfish ends. The shameless hypocrisy of download theft and the puerile attempts to validate such theft should embarrass all who simply steal what they want with no intention of paying for it.I bet the vast majority of such down loaders are running firewalls, anti-spyware, anti-viral software and the rest of it to ensure no one f**ks with their digital data.

Try before I buy means that I KNOW what I'm paying for has value to me. And since I know I'm getting my bang for my buck, I will look for more music to see what else I can happily spend my money on.Otherwise, if I had to "gamble" on whether a song is good, and since I've been disappointed more often than not in the past, I'd be more inclined to spend my money elsewhere.

I find that I am so much happer with an I-pod and user generated content (be it podcasts or garage bands) than I ever was with holywood/television/record labels. As a consumer I think the traditional content industry can burn and i'll be just as happy.

I own most of my music, and bought several albums after first downloading parts of them. Once I downloaded something _after_ buying it, because they sold me a defective/warped CD, and I didn't want to drive 20 miles back to the store to exchange it. The bulk of the stuff I have left to buy must be shipped overseas from Japan. :)The people who pirate the most are usually kids who don't have money to buy a lot of music anyways. If they weren't downloading thousands of songs to their computers, they'd be listening to thousands of songs on the radio.

I would like to point out three things:1) Once the price of something hits zero, people are unlikely to shell out for it again. Music is now free, the people who tell you otherwise are the people selling it. Concerts are not free, and I already shelled out $400 to see U2 this year twice, U2 made a profit.2) If the record companies hadn't gouged us, the people wouldn't have made napster what it was. Once we learned that it cost 1รง to make a cd, people realized that the system was messed up, and they fought back.3) Good artists will always have their patrons, and the best artists will likely be rich, since their work can be disseminated so many ways in the digital age.

As somebody who is into music that is what some would consider to be "underground" i cannot thank music downloading services enough for helping me find all of the music i listen to today. I personally agree with this article fully and from a person standpoint, can back up the claim that at least in my case, my downloading of music has helped artists. Basically, i never would have found any of the music i like without downloading, which means i wouldnt listen to music because everything on the radio is pretty awful. However, through discovering new artists through downloading, i can now give them money by going to see their shows, buying merchendise like shirts or posters, buying other releases that i havent pirated, and of course, shaking their hand and thanking them for making my ears smile.

"when we as music fans download & pirate music were only helping the artists out anyway"..
