oreillynet.com — I?ve been a big fan of Firefox since practically the beginning, back when it was called Phoenix or Firebird. I like the way Firefox does things. It?s feature rich and the UI is well thought out. Sadly, lately, for me Firefox has become unusable.

I went to both the news website and Yahoo mail on Debian Etch, and Firefox did not crash. The crashing may be caused by plug-ins or some other third-party interaction.

did she tried to update the browser ? FF's current version is 1.5.0.6, but she's still using 1.5.0.4. maybe they DID fixed it in the last 2 point releases.

Each distro has their own version of the browser. It is tuned to run in the respective environment. Ubuntu is up to speed with 1.5.0.5 because 1.5.0.6 has very little to do if anything with the linux version. That is why the logo in ubuntu is not the official firefox logo. updates in Ubuntu seem to be making it out rather quick. Nothing bothering me in 1.5.0.5. Yahoo! Mail works as well.

I use Firefox 1.5 with Fedora Core 3 in KDE. There are times when Firefox stops responding for a few seconds - but nothing critical. Another problem I face is that sometimes the page does not render. When I click a link, the page is downloaded by the old page will still be shown. The window will be updated only when I resize the window. There are also some generic problems that effects all Gnome based apps in KDE(like menu items can't be read when highlighted).Overall I am satisfied with Firefox - I use it exclusively(except when testing my scripts in IE).

Sometimes pre-compiled tarball works (1.5 segfaulted and hung constantly when I tried to use it in the month between its release and its appearance in the repos), especially if you don't worry about breaking yum's compatibility with updating Firefox. I, for one, would much rather wait on 1.5.0.6 than have to manually install it every time there's a new release and worry about it crashing if I do.

It is funny, I also have problems with FF1.5 on both my Intel iMac and SuSE 10.1 distro on an Athlon X2 box. After an hour and 5-6 tabs later or so on either platform it would just crash or quit unexpectedly. These are FF's installs without added plug-ins or extensions. So I've switched to Opera on Linux and back to Safari on the Mac and I can run these all day long, they'll slow down over time but they won't crap out. Here's the kicker though, from my observation FF2.0b1 is more stable on Windows than FF1.5 is on the Mac or Linux platform.

I get a crash once every few months - very few and far between, and only when I have over a dozen tabs open & forget to close old ones. The author could have at least listed what extensions were installed... Inaccurate!

"If it can be blamed on one (or more) extensions or the combination does that justify Firefox crashing because of misbehaving extensions?"With the level of depth Firefox allows its plugins to have, the problem is undoubtedly with the plugin, not Firefox. Firefox cant patrol all 3rd party plugins to make sure they are coded to specification.

I would reply to tehpunk's post but it would be like explaining how qmail and stunnel work to ted stevens. I'd feel stupid for thinking I could explain it to this guy in the first place.
