This happens to me all the time. I went to school for web development, and when people hear that I get asked all of their computer questions like why the printer wont work, or how to do something in whatever random program it is that they are having issues with. It can be annoying and they look at me like I'm dumb if I cant solve the issue. I never get questions on web design/development.

They never do. They can't even be bothered to Google something or look it up in the help, they always just come straight to me.Occasionally I'll throw in a disclaimer like "Well, there are a million ways to do it, but here's how I do it." And my ways just happen to be the complex, pain in the butt ways of going about it! Usually works...

You're so right on that one. I have two, "older" mates who decided to get PCs but refuse to educate themselves about computers, instead they rely on me to bail them out every time they screw things up. Of course when something major goes wrong I get blamed fro screwing it up. NEVER again will I help anyone.

I've worked at Wal-Mart in the electronics dept. for 2 years now, after 3 week I learned not to say yes when people ask "Are you the computer expert!?", even if I do help them about 75% of the time they offer me money in exchange for fixing their computer. No amount of money is worth that much hassle.

i see you've discovered what life is like as a service professional. try telling people at a party you're a lawyer, or a doctor. you're going to hear about every traffic ticket or rash that person has for the rest of your life if you don't learn how to charge for your time. i know nerds think they suffer alone but this is something almost EVERYONE in our economy has to deal with. deal with it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I can't listen to my favourite disk, and then it appears that it is spoiled by another bad disk explosion.... Don't tell anyone that you are a geek)))

My neighbor is 75 yrs old and completely PC illiterate, I'm always helping him out but when his MS XP machine bugs out he always blames the last person to use his PC. He doesn't understand how Windows is a piece of crap full of bugs, he thinks it's like a mouse trap 3 moving parts that never fail. He hasn't a clue, I told him yesterday to "sod off" after he ranted and raved about how I broke his PC.
He's filled it with 50,000 mp3s ripped from CDs etc etc does no maintenance on it and wonders why it's slowed to a crawl.

This is so true it hurts, and I regret telling ANYONE I know ANYTHING about computers. From now on I only help pretty girls, at least then I get to go to their bedrooms :)
