theoatmeal.com— My latest comic. "Printers are remarkable in that they're just as crappy and unreliable now as they were in 1995. "

My experience matches yours. I bought mine in late 2005 or early 2006 on newegg, and I am still using the starter cartridge it came with. In that time I printed about 1600 pages, I had to move and packed it up and left it in the box for several months until I needed it again and then set it back up. The need toner light came on then, wasn't on before, so I took it out and rocked it side to side a few times (gently) and put it back in. After awhile the light went out and it has been printing happily ever since. It is a relatively huge printer but has worked like a champ with only a few minor jams.My printer:http://www.brother-usa.com/Printer/ModelDetail.asp ...A few tricks I haven't tried yet but I am keeping handy for the future:http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/3980 ...
I purchased a Brother all in one device and sofar (1yr 2 mnths) it hasn't played up at all. It does however love to spend half the day cleaning itself - maybe the Brother engineers thought I wanted a cat!
