independent.com — Only 11 percent of the French population qualifies as obese, while we almost triple that percentage mark here in the land of plenty. Furthermore, the French eat three times as much saturated animal fat as Americans do and only a third as many die of heart attacks.

Don't forget that lovely invention the automobile.. These days most suburbs do not have sidewalks built alongside the roads and if there are. There's no place to walk to other than for the sake of walking. North American cities are designed for cars, not people. Europeans, tend to walk most places, do their grocery shopping day by day vs the weekly haul at Costco, Walmart, etc. When I visit relatives in Italy, I'm impressed with how well aunt's and uncles' who are well into their 70's fare. They take daily walks, eat fresh food, go out to the bar for espresso and wine to socialize, play cards or just sit down with the paper and relax. We are workaholics and we're constantly in fear of losing our jobs to "insert cost cutting trend" here. This was a very good article. It makes a lot of sense that sitting down and socializing while eating burns off calories vs sitting on your car chomping on a burger or rushing your lunch at your desk. I myself am on the chubby side and have been making better choices, buying my groceries daily, etc. And I'm seeing results. I feel better, I'm more relaxed. Fortunately, I live in a part of the city where all amenities are within walking distance. It really comes down to cultural values it seems.

Monosaccharides are actually better for you than Disaccharides because they appear in nature more commonly aka fruit.

"Taking the time to prepare meals with fresh ingredients, walking to the markets to buy those ingredients, and then actually sitting down with friends and family to savor the meal? Now that’s a start."I'm french and I don't know anyone doing this. By the way, I weigh 150 pounds for 70 inches.

The AVERAGE age of death was 40; that means a lot of babies died. One dead baby plus one dead 80 year old = an average of 40!
