eh, not every EE can install a mod chip... Just to get things clear I'm a CmpE (basically EE) and am thoroughly capable of SMT or microSMT (in the case of my mac mini overclocking) soldering, but they do not teach these things in textbooks. It takes more than knowledge, but a steady hand and experience.
Actually whitesanjuro, CompE is very similar to EE. I think you are thinking more of CS. I recently switched majors from CompE to EE and both majors take alot of the same courses. CompE focuses more on hardware rather than software.
I'm pretty damn sure you're all arguing in circles because your nitpicks are all irrelevant to the central theme of the article which is: Do things with the stuff around you.
I've been working on a mod project to my truck and I'm still working at it. I've been pushing to put an inverter in the truck and the outlets in the dash to make it stock. It's kind of a stupid idea but I have had fun planning and working on it so far, and having 120vAC never hurts (unless you touch the wires)A link to my diary/posts on what I've done/planned so far can be found here: http://cryo-laboratory.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=962
