linuxinsider.com — Why don't more people use OpenOffice, the free and open source alternative to Microsoft Office? Microsoft has spent years and dollars engineering creative ways to keep people using its costly software and preventing them from switching to OpenOffice -- that's one explanation, writes Lou Dolinar.

Because it's fully possible to pirate software published by Microsoft, and because MS Office 2001 is better than OpenOffice, much less MS Office 2007.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I didn't have time to read all the posts but I did not see NeOffice mentioned which we use in our office of 12 Macs. Very polished and frequent updates.

I use it and like it better than Microsoft Office. Also, I predict it will become a business standard.Understand this; as more people use it, the rate of development/enhancement will increase. More people will submit ideas that improve it, and more open source developers will direct their attention at making it superior to any other office suite. It's just a matter of time.... I have an idea. Each business that uses it, should place a link in their email signatures that goes to a page that explains why it should be their company's choice as an office suite.

I prefer AbiWord. Wish I had known about it back in college.

Comments like "what the hell is there to learn" are comical. So you naturally dream how to write VBA in your sleep and are immediately skilled? Yeah, right.

I use Open Office 2.4 and MS Office 2003. I am a light to medium user and am starting to prefer Open Office more and more. Yes it is slow, but I don't think I will be paying for an Office upgrade any time soon if ever. For heavy users Open Office isn't there and probably won't ever be. For light users its a great free option.

Maybe because it sucks? I'm sorry, but OpenOffice is not good enough. I love Microsoft Word; from Office XP on, it's amazing. The only problem I have with Office is the large memory footprint. OpenOffice is sluggish, has yet another interface I'd have to learn, and quite simply, it's not handed to me when I enroll in classes nor OEM-installed on my new PC, and as it is now, it won't be. Functionality is great, but seeing as how most of today's computers could control a mission to Mars, it wouldn't hurt to have a some polish and the bells and whistles.
