good.is— Why does a salad cost more than a Big Mac? Part of the reason is that a huge proportion of our food subsidies go to meat while only 0.37 percent go to fruits and vegetables.

@DanielHunter: what is your time worth? a jar of prego might get you your mediocre spaghetti dinner on the table faster, but it's garbage food. you are literally feeding you and your family garbage. thanks to subsidized farming there's so much surplus corn being grown that companies like cargill and conagra are cooking corn into your crackers, cakes, and catsup. If you eat industrial misery meat, it was likely fed on surplus corn and soybeans, which is why you can afford to eat beef every night of the week if you desire. Dollar menu burgers cost $1 for a reason. It's agricultural waste, and we're scarfing it down as fast as we can. Nation after nation is seeing rising obesity rates, and we are rapidly becoming fatter, slower, and unhealthier than any generation of humans has ever been. We're dying by the millions because we eat garbage.Plant a garden, find a local cowshare, spend some time cooking with your family, learn to care about what goes into your food. Make a big batch of really really good spaghetti sauce and then freeze what you don't eat right away. It'll take a little more effort, but you won't need any corn for your spaghetti sauce.Life is short, why eat badly?
Help me out here. Is there a better way to point this out without having (me) sounding like a jerk? :/Also, your first comment has a good point. I used to think the problem has to do with the DEMAND from the customers.
Yeah, now the Simpsons make me kind of sad. I can't sleep at night because I worry that teenagers will see the new episodes and think I suck because I used to love that show.
I feel a vague sense that people who are disagreeing so heartily with this that they feel in some way that they are being judged or threatened somehow. I could be completely wrong but that's just how it seems to me. Anyway nobody here is saying that meat is terrible for you or that you should never eat meat because it's poison. This thread is clearly in support of moderation and consciousness about what exactly you're eating and where it comes from and it has been shown in studies time and time again that populations that eat less red meat are generally healthier. Yes, meat and the nutrients derived from it are indeed important to human health, but that doesn't mean that you have to eat it every day and damn the expense. I don't know where the insinuation that posters above are "on the MSG train" came from but there is good reason to avoid MSG, mostly from what i've read simply the monosodium part, in that it has been shown to possibly lead to increased blood pressure, but I'll agree with you that most people overhype the danger and that most people who are "allergic" to it are just having a psychosomatic response.Anyway I don't personally see a moral or nutritional imperative to completely swear off meat, but I believe that there is at least enough evidence to support a reduced meat diet, substituting mostly with fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. I try not to be inflammatory so I'm sorry if I was off-base, and I also apologize for the wall of text.
Your first "repackaged" comes after no packaging, and you can skip, "...partially cooked...repackaged...microwaved..." for those of us that just buy frozen, raw meat. Also, you can skip, "...and other chemicals..." for a lot of meat that is grown without growth hormones, and, "...frozen..." for meat bought fresh.

Wow, sweet generalization, and you really seem to believe that every conservative is like the straw man you've created.

I know this is true for a lot of our vegetables. But since it's a cereal crop, it may have been associated with grains in the chart.
