here's how i see it going. it's not the potential awesomeness of the phone itself. it's the combined potential awesomeness when the accessories are added. because that's how the iPod series worked. now, the thing is, whether the accessories are going to be purely software based or actual hardware you attach to the device. (doesn't make sense really, you'd want your phone to be as small and light as possible...) maybe a combination of both.
I have yet to own a cell phone... I'm not much of a "phone" person so I've waited for the appropriate moment and device. If apple can do it right, I think they can, I'll get my first mobile phone this year. I'm quite sure that I'm not the only one in my position.
All phone have problems, but I think as of right now Nokia is making some of the best devices out there. If I didn't need to have Verizon ( CDMA works best in my area) I'd dump my Q and get one of the Nseries nokia phones. Nokias have the best UI of any phone right now and until Apple enters the game I'm not so sure that's changing anytime soon.
mp3 is the one and only thing that Apple got right.Their video game console was terrible and failed as badly as indrema and phantom.Their Mac Cube was another collosal failure.Newton = yet another failure.Tie-dye iMacs = in very bad taste and garish.Their mice suck.Their keyboards don't even have a forward delete key for crying out loud!FrontRow sucks.iTV is a knockoff of media extenders that have been around for years, except iTV locks you into iTMs vids. So, they get one thing right, mp3 players, and now everyone instantly splooges at mere rumors at what they might do next? Good grief.
This is great. I'm glad someone had the stones to throw down the gauntlet and make a meaty, specific prediction, entirely capable of failing, point-by-point. A friend of mine tends to make those overly broad predictions I keep telling him are useless... he'll say: "MySpace will fail." I'll ask him, "When? How?" We've finally agreed to use its Alexa ranking as a measuring rod (if nothing else). I keep telling him it ain't going anywhere. Now, Ryan Block saying exactly what he thinks the Apple Phone will be, and what it specifically WON'T do? Neat. I've saved this to my desktop. This will be more entertaining than Google buying YouTube, after Mark cuban said only a moron would do so, and further, that they would be sued up the wazoo as soon as they did. Yup, good stuff. Maybe block will be right. If so, he'll sound pretty smart for all his specificity. If not... well, not so much.
@leobabyIn the 10 days I had my Treo 700wx (before shipping it back to Sprint because I had fits getting Bluetooth to pair w/ Missing Sync), the one feature I liked was the icons on the screen when I called voicemail.Example: a disk for Save, a Trash can for.. take a guess, and arrows to navigate. Granted, they acted as shortcut keys since you hear the DTMF tone when you click on the icon, but it beat remembering which was Delete, #3 or 7 (I always confuse my cell phone w/ Vonage)
