Aerodynamics are great and all, but fuel economy on a grand scale is going to be affected mostly by improvements in the drivetrain and reducing the mass of the vehicle. Most cars are driven in cities at an average of 24-28 mph. Aerodynamics hardly comes into play at these speeds. Minimizing the amount of energy lost by the mechanics of the drivetrain is key to economic milage.
