pokedandprodded.health.com — As the U.S. government throws tax money on the banking bonfire, you have to wonder how many billion-dollar notes are left in the Washington ATM machine for health-care reform. If an income-tax hike isn’t in the cards for 95% of Americans, there will surely be a revenue hunt elsewhere. Why not cigarettes?

In my experience, it makes it a little bitter. As a statistician, I really feel I need to do a double-blind taste test with lots of subjects. I will start designing a protocol. Also, I shouldn't really have said above that smokers' cum is unpleasant overall. Obviously sweet is better than bitter, but I have almost always enjoyed the taste just the same.

That's not how economics is supposed to work genius. Tobacco is not so hard to produce that people need to grow poor from smoking it. Nor are the health costs enough to justify anywhere near 10$ pack. Keep trying to control people though, tell me how that works out.

While I think smoking is horrible, and understand that these people strain our health system, and acknowledge the goal should definitely be to get people to quit smoking...I'm very conflicted about this idea, if only because this would be a regressive tax, disproportionately hurting the poor. Sure, it is their fault for smoking, and they are idiots for doing that regardless of how much cigarettes cost, but they are addicted. I think if the government decided to do something like this, they'd have to put a lot of that money into free programs and products to help them quit. And of course the other problem is that this would just create a tobacco black market, and probably encourage the use of other drugs as substitutes (in other words, pot looks pretty cheap when cigarettes are worth their weight in gold).
