stateofthenewsmedia.org — Cable news focuses much of its time on 3/4 topics a day and relies on wires and brief ?tell stories? for much of the rest of the news. There's 2 distinct parts to a cable day, daytime is more focused on crime/disaster where nighttime increasingly is more about topics that spark controversy and suit the particular audience that tunes in.

They don't cover science because people who are interested in science don't tune in because they don't cover science.

discovery channel, like the history channel, has started to degrade over time. discovery channel likes to put things that attract viewers on, like any channel. it is easy for cable channels to try to gain a broader audience because broader = more and more viewers = more potential advertisers being interested in doing their thing. i always check discovery, discovery science, history and the national geographic channels. try national geographic if you are tired of the discovery channel.

I'm a journalist and from my experience tabloid media all over the place has the same strategy for boosting their ratings. We want people to feel, not think. We appeal to simple gut instincts like fear and desire. Our two favorite topics are violence and sex. We are not here to inform, but to entertain, as we have learned there is far more money in entertainment than public information. Science? Not so sexy. Unless it involves naked women. Then we can probably report on it.
