nomorequo.blogspot.com — And I'm not trying to be racist. We're talking demographic, aggregate statistics here. Awhile ago, there was a news story picked up by the Washington Post and many other major news outlets. Here's the Washington Post headline: "For Math Students, Self-Esteem Might Not Equal High Scores."

I'm shocked something as racially prejudiced as this has made the digg front page. Certainly some encouragement from the digg team to incite racial hatred - you've done it to the blacks, but hey, asians are easier targets apparently. They're perceived to be more clever at maths because those from the far east send the best ones here - that's all. They know they won't be able to gain entry into US university with middling grades, they have to stand out. Ask any asian born in the US for a couple of generations (to ween out the parent influence) if they're pressurized as much and you'll be surprised.Actually, you won't be... just that people are ignorant.

Oh no, I'm pretty close to them both, so I'm not just assuming from seeing them writing or something. Of course, they mess around too :)

Westerners have realized that knowledge of math and science doesn't bring home the bacon. Asians are just pulling themselves out of poverty for the most part. The west underwent the industrial revolution long ago. Westerners are less inclined to study math and science because jobs in those fields pay next to nothing compared to business jobs like investment banking, etc. Wasting your time learning a bunch of math you will never use is just mental masturbation.

Another mandarin student here.as for the higher numbers, I believe they go by groupings of 4 zeroes. Intermediate powers are done more or less like englishso 123,456 would be yi shi er wen san qian si bai wu shi liu. sometimes zeroes ("ling") are said explicitly, sometimes they are simply omitted (there are *some* inconsistencies). Colloquially, however, most people will simply list off the digits without any "unit size markers" when they get that long. For long trailing zeroes, you simply "multiply" the necessary large units. so 10,000,000 would be "yi wen-qian", something like how Sagan likes to say "ten billion billion" or the like. There is also a very formal method of written numerics that is essentially scientific notation where one lists off the digits (though they have different characters and different pronunciations) followed by a size signifier. This was primarily for old-time official imperial written records and isn't used much anymore except for ceremonial purposes.I'm not a native speaker, though, so please correct me if I'm wrong

I'm half asian and I am TERRIBLE at math. Good thing my mom gave up on me a long time ago (grades wise) otherwise I'd probably hate myself.

@RjuneHey - he said that he's terrible at math.

The Chinese are good at math because if they do badly in school they are taken to slave factories to make stuff for us, their parents are taken to camps for torture, and their bodies are harvested for beauty products.

Alright, I think that math is is just not stressed enough in schools in the US. When I was in grade school, middile school, and high school, my teachers were stupid. They wanted me to decorate posters to create a "visual" experience when I wrote a paper. I spent more time doing dumb art projects, and writing papers for history then I did learning math. But you really should know a relativly high level of math to be prepared for the future. I am a accounting/finance major and I take some math, not as bad as engineers, but more tan the usual major. But engineering and accoungting/finance is where the real money is. Really, if you majored in history, you suck. I'm sorry. Don't complain when you are 40 and only making 50 thousand a year.
