I've noticed that whenever Apple competes with anyone, the other company always gets the benefit of the doubt and a bunch of promises that the competing company will be better in THE FUTURE. It's never the here and now. People always use THE FUTURE to trash Apple and as you know, it's hard to compete with THE FUTURE all the time, especially when you can just make up stuff.Apple, on the other hand, shows a product in the HERE AND NOW. Remember the 2007 MacWorld Keynote? Steve didn't show FUTURE features of the iPhone in a slide show. He had a working model on the stage. No one had to hype the iPhone because they had already seen it WORKING in the HERE AND NOW.No one doubts Google and they're abilities, but their business model has several problems. Several months ago, I commented on Digg and basically said that while open source is great, Google was going to run into problems with the cell phone providers gimping features and that's exactly what happened with the G1 phone from T-Mobile. There was an initial cap on bandwidth, no tethering, no stereo Bluetooth, no headphone jack, and no video player. When Apple didn't implement some of these features, they were condemned for being mean and petty. When Google does it, the same people say, hey, don't worry, we're get it from another company like Verizon. Uh, yeah, right. The simple of the fact of the matter is that Apple isn't holding back features because they are mean and petty. They're faced with the same problems as any company working with cell phone companies and writing code.

I'd say the G1 will be no better or no worse. Just because you despise apple does not mean you should trash the iPhone just because a competitor comes out. Heck, I don't like Apple but I have an iPhone 3G due to business reasons. I love it and the icing on the cake is it looks great. The problem with most technologies today is you typically don't get something that is practical, functional, and stylish. Apple has done a fantastic job of making their products appealing. I hope more people than Google step into the market. Remember competition is great for the consumer. Throwing poop does nothing but leave both of you smelling like poop. So do everyone a favor, give fair reviews, let the consumer decide, thus strengthening our market, and giving consumer choices.

I dunno. Apple talked about future 3G and future GPS but I already had that on my WM phone before the iPhone even came out. That made the iPhone not even an option despite the lovely screen and nice UI. What good is that if I had to stop wirelessly tethering my phone or using my TomTom software or Google maps or anything that required the 3G conection I have had for years on Palm and WM devices? They finally added those features and good on them! Now it's actually a contender. Future plans are worth something after all.

I was agreeing with you right up tell you said "care less about whether one platform has a more variety of apps or not." which is a huge thing in buying a smart phone.

Well, its released and they still didn't release the source to any of the Google apps, the source for the SDK, and the phone is still carrier locked so whatever source code locks the phone you still haven't received. But maybe doing more research will change Google's mind still.... hmmmm
