While we certainly have our share of chemical-based cleaners in our house, I think my mom's become much more careful about what she uses to clean. She was hospitalized because she was scrubbing the house and the combination of chemicals she used resulted in highly poisonous fumes. She didn't mix the chemicals, and she didn't huff them. It was just that she did SO MUCH cleaning that day with SO MANY cleaners that the air in the house was rather saturated with fumes from Clorox, window cleaner, ammonia, 409, and other things. I think it was the presence of bleach and ammonia in the air that was the problem. She's a fan of baking soda and peroxide for a lot of things. Half the time she brushes her teeth, she uses those plain instead of tooth paste (it whitens really well). She uses rubbing alcohol a lot too, though that doesn't have the "won't poison the grandkid" benefit that a lot of other things do.
How is it any better for the plant to produce pesticides INSIDE itself and secrete them through the leaves than to put pesticides on the outside? At least the spray-on pesticides can be washed off. You can't get the poisons out of the plants that are Genetically Modified to become poisonous (yes, that's exactly what it is. they are poisons aimed at the insects, but do you really think a sufficient amount of them won't be just as much of a problem to you, if not more, than the kind you can wash off?)Sugar's effect on obesity can be counter-acted by something as simple as riding a bike or taking a walk. Getting rid of the cancer you get from aspartame is a LOT harder.
Oh brother, here we go with the food wars. I will tell you the same thing I tell the Food Nazis on the other side of the spectrum. STAY THE f**k OUT OF MY MOUTH AND I WILL STAY OUT OF YOURS! I don't care what you eat or how little it costs, just bag my damn groceries and STFU! What is the deal with this race to the bottom anyway? You want to eat the cheapest food you can find no matter the taste or healthiness of the food, knock yourself out! Even if you HAVE to eat the cheapest food out there because you are poor that still doesn't give you the right to be an indignant assh**e about what other people eat. What's next homeless people giving home owners s**t for not living in an apartment?
Enough with victimizing Whole Foods already. Because their shtick is taking the Green angle, that is the reason they are the subject of the article. And vilifying CNN as if it's a pro-corporation evil empire looking to crush poor little Whole Foods? Give me a break, already. Most things do not have a conspiracy theory inherent to them. I can only imagine the reaction if this was a story on foxnews.com.
OK, assuming that this article is accurate, which I doubt... 30% of Whole Foods produce is locally grown. But how does that compare to chain stores? Something tells me they're not even close to 30%.
